Review

“Therapists will find this wonderful book helpful in two ways—as both a textbook and a reference book. Read as a textbook, they will learn essentially all they need to know about why patients are taking the meds they are taking, and what the likely next steps in treatment will be. As a reference book, therapists can look up a patient’s medication or diagnosis and quickly review dosing, side effects, and rationale for use. As a seasoned psychopharmacologist, I found the information accurate, useful, and presented with a refreshing clarity. It’s rare to find a book with so much information that is also a pleasure to read. I recommend it highly to any mental clinician, whether they are a therapist, a prescriber, or both.”—Daniel Carlat, MD, editor-in-chief of The Carlat Psychiatry Report“I’m a psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist with no medical training, and I found Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists to be a compelling and stimulating read, as well as a welcome addition to my reference shelf. This text is coherent and user-friendly, and reading it is a surprisingly pleasurable way to expand your knowledge in an area of clinical treatment usually not made this accessible to nonmedical professionals.” —Susan Flynn, PhD“I recommend Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists to psychotherapists from various clinical trainings and diverse clinical orientations, as well as to nonpsychiatric physicians and their prescribing assistants. One of the most valuable elements of this text is the authors’ reminder to consider when and how medication can be appropriate to treatment, and how the clinician is an essential part of the psycho-medical treatment team. “If you have only one reference book on your shelf addressing the interface between clinical treatment and psychopharmacology, this should be it.” —Marvin B. Berman, PhD“Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists is a modern masterpiece written by a multidisciplinary team of distinguished practitioners. It is one of the most clearly written and reader-friendly yet comprehensive books on the subject of psychiatric diagnosis and psychotropic drug therapy. The book is packed full of useful tables, figures, and illustrations that amplify the main text, or can be used independently for a rapid introduction to the field or for reviewing the fundamentals. Covering both the spectrums of pathophysiology and the neurobiology of drug action, this slim and state-of-the-art-and-science text is truly a handbook worthy of the name, and should be an essential resource for mental health professionals and students alike.” —Clifford N. Lazarus, PhD, licensed psychologist and director of Comprehensive Psychological Services in Princeton, NJ, and coauthor of Don’t Believe It for a Minute and The 60-Second Shrink“Handbook of Clinical Psychopharmacology for Therapists is a wonderfully useful and comprehensive book. It should be essential reading for all mental health professionals and for others like myself who have family members suffering from mental illness. Its great virtues are its clarity and its humane and informed sense of the diagnosis, treatment, and care of extraordinarily complicated conditions.”—Jay Neugeboren, author of Imagining Robert“This book belongs on the desk of every psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, social worker, or anyone who works with clients who are taking psychoactive drugs. Also, anyone teaching or interested in abnormal psychology will find it indispensable. The authors manage, with judicious use of well-designed tables and clear, concise writing, to fill a gap in the current literature. No other book with which I am familiar covers the history of psychiatric medicine as well as both the neurochemistry and clinical use of psychotropics. The authors make excellent use of case histories, which are always to the point. I cannot think of anything that could be added to this text, or any part of it I would want to change.” —Harry Avis, PhD, professor of psychology at Sierra College and author of Drugs and Life

Purchased this due to comment in my textbook Foundations of Addictions Counseling. It isn't a required book, but I thought I would get it to use when needed. Very pleased. According to textbook for my class they said this would be an appropriate text to add to psychology major substance abuse counselor library. Very pleased.Debbie

This book is full of useful information and has a permanent place on my bookshelf but it's written with all of the engagement qualities of a DIY furniture assembly manual. Nothing against this particular author because he simply follows a presumably proud tradition of textbook writing, but why must so many textbooks be stick-in-the-eye experiences? Passive voice, cumbersome language usage, mind-numbing prose... all of the qualities we're told never to use by our composition teachers beginning in grade school. I guess most PhDs feel exempt from the rules of readability. Perhaps Dr Rosenthal (The Encyclopedia of Counseling) could start a side business teaching other academics how to write in a manner that doesn't put the rest of us to sleep.

I bought this book as a required text for a graduate class. I found this text to be highly useful across classes. It provides information and facts about disorders and diagnosis, as well as the biological mechanisms of the disorder and/or treatments. Then, in a later matching chapter, pharmacological options are discussed in detail, including risks and benefits. My only complaint is that the book tends to provide a large amount of info on a particular medication option or two, while seriously lacking detail on others. If you choose to study one of the less detailed options, the book serves as a good starting point but further research will probably be needed for more detailed or specific info. On a good note, there are OTC and herbal options discussed as appropriate, plus an entire chapter dedicated to this area. This is generally a well-written book that is easy to understand with having minimal background in biology. If you need a resource for understanding mental health medications, this is a good one that is not too hard to digest.

This review is solely based on the condition of the book and not the content. I bought this book new the spine is peeling, the pages wont lay flat, and the print is cut off in several pages. This book is a fake. You would think that it would have better quality but the price was too good to pass up. You get what you pay for.

The Kindle version of this book is crudely put together - the formatting is messy, even when using my Kindle for Mac to read the book, and it is missing the cover, as well as some of the links inside the book to skip to certain sections. I wish I had bought the physical copy.

This book was put together very horribly. This is a hardback book so the pages should not be falling out unless ripped out. As soon as you turn the pages in the book they all start to fall out. The entire book has fallen apart and I have been trying to keep up with pages by placing them in a large envelope. I have never had book fall apart just by turning pages. It appears as if there was no attachment in the inseam so the pages were just laid in the book, but as soon as you start to turn a page they came out one by one. I would not suggest anyone buying this book unless another way is found to put the book together so that it stays together.

The book is very informative and a value added text to every therapist's library. The major problem is the book's binding. There are only two sewn points and they are close to the center of the binding. This leaves too much loose space above and below those binding points which, after only a few reads, resulted in folds at the upper corners on the binding side. It feels like the pages are going to fall out from the binding every time you turn a page.

HATED this class. Book was an ok read, needed for class. I like that it broke things down for therapist who do not use medication on a daily. Therapist do interact with psychiatrist and doctors who treat the same client/patient so it this book does help the therapist understand what medication the client is taking, why and how it effects them.

This book was no where close to being new, unless it was just being thrown around the warehouse the entire time. The binding on this book cracked, the edges look worn and the front cover looks like there is water trapped under the cover. This is the ugliest, "NEW" book I have ever purchased. I always purchase books here and when I purchase a "USED" book, this is the quality I get. not a new book.I don't have time or money to send it back and wait to get another one since I have already began class and really need. Otherwise, I would send it back!!!!
