An academic looks back on the joys and challenges of her Mennonite girlhood. You'd think an academic writing a memoir would pose a fish-vs-fowl situation, but Shirley Hershey Showalter does a wonderful job balancing the highly personal memories of a daughter and parishioner with the acute observations of a social scientist. I've read a couple of 1950s-era memoirs lately and I love how this one gives its lens on the past an extra half-turn, so that we get a view of the time period through the eyes of someone whose particular upbringing meant she lived outside of it even as it went on around her.Showalter expresses warmth and affection for the Plain Mennonite way of life while also considering where it failed to serve some members. She's equally honest in her consideration of herself and her sometimes uneasy place within the plain Mennonite community. By then end of the book, I I understood the conflict she faced caught between the secure world she knew and the aspirations which would carry her away from it.

A poignant true story that will captivate the hearts & thoughtful minds of those who appreciate sweet lesson brought by the deeper meanings of life.Shirley's weaves mini-stories--FULL OF HEART--throughout the book. Each highlights a precious lesson and the Balance neededbetween Freedom and a Preservation of the Quality of Innocence. As a mother, I searched for a book like BLUSH! I was thrilledto read it with my daughter- a young avid book-lover. The stories provided an opportunity for conversations about our capacity as humansto appreciate others and be brave enough to think differently while holding strong to our values. As a mom and published author, I see the tremendous value in BLUSH. as a book to be shared by Mothers and their children. This story brings out the themes of Deliberate Living~seeing the meaning within the little moments in life;the ingenuity brought about by innocence; and the contrasting Realities & Freedoms of the Cultural World beyond our own. ~A TREASURE

This is, at its heart, a love story- written about the the parents who raised her, the siblings she laughed and cried with and the community who believed in looking after one another. It's about a young girl raised in a Mennonite community during the 1950's and 60's who chooses to live in the secular world while still maintaining a strong faith and a love for her people.Shirley Hershey grew up on two farms that both her mother and father worked. Her father came from a fairly restrictive Mennonite family while her mother came from a more liberal one. That her parents found a way to make differing backgrounds work is a testament to their love for each other, their family, and their strong faith. I say this because they both worked towards a middle ground. Her father had a contentious relationship with his own father and there was bitterness between them. Her mother's mother, had she not been a Mennonite, might very well have ended up in a theater somewhere. Shirley's father wanted his children to know that no matter how strict he was at times, he loved each of them dearly. Her mother worked to show her children the good in the outside world while still keeping them grounded in their faith and community. It must have seemed like they walked a very fine line at times. The changes between the 1950's and 60's must also have been a challenge, and try as they might to hold on to how things had always been, times were changing to such a degree that even their sheltered community was affected. This was especially true for young women like Shirley. I suppose you could also say that she was born to stretch boundaries- with her faith, education and future. In the end her family and community made her strong enough to straddle two very different worlds. The support of her parents for her decision to attend college made it possible for her to go out into the broader world without weakening their bond. The mutual love and understanding they strived to maintain was probably a major reason why she was strong enough to live outside her community without ever leaving it completely behind.I enjoyed this book. While I am not well versed in the Mennonite faith, I can see the appeal of living a simpler life without excessive outside influences. Surprisingly, I felt a bit envious of her. She came from a stable background and had both a supportive loving family and community. Not to say that there weren't struggles, arguments and tears- I'm sure there were, but she never seemed to doubt that she was loved. Every child should be so lucky, and we should all strive to make that happen.

This memoir transports the reader into the world of a girl growing up in a Mennonite family on a farm in Lancaster County, PA in the 1950s. For many it may appear to be a quaint childhood environment far different than their own. But for me it was a reminder of the many ways that my own childhood experiences were similar to those of the author. There are obviously plenty of differences between us, but hardly a chapter went by in this book that I didn’t think of similar experiences from my own life. Her chapter titled "Standing Up To The Bishop" reminded me of religious experiences from my younger years that I now view with less than positive enthusiasm. Would survivors of those experiences be the same people today if they had been spared the experience? When I noticed that Shirley had included a Glossary at the end of the book I immediately checked to see if she include one of the most important words of my youth, "worldly." Yes, it was there under "The World." If you think that the word "world" is a synonym for "planet earth," you don't understand the theological significance of the word. If you want to know the real meaning of the word you'll have to buy the book and see for yourself.Under Acknowledgments I noticed that Shirley included thanks to "... critics of my faith... . You have been my teachers and mentors, too." It was thoughtful of her to say that. She even included some recipes at the end of the book for those who wish to experience the taste of cooking from the Pennsylvania Dutch branch of the Mennonite Church. (Not all Mennonites come from that ancestry.)
