I do bookbinding for a hobby and also as a help to the local library. This book is a great way to help explain to beginners what I do and why. The diagrams are nicely done and the written explanations are concise and well thought out. The equipment shown can be made fairly easily and cheaply. My only caution on making your equipment is the same as when I am teaching how to do it, measure twice and cut once. Scaling your equipment to whatever sized book(s) you will be binding is the only other caution. A thorough and knowledgeable author and a great teaching resource.
This is a great resource with apt descriptions and excellent dimensional diagrams. While I recognize this version (updated from the 1970s publication) was printed in the early 1990s, I do find the photographs unclear. If I already knew what it was portraying, I am sure it would be better, but poor image quality makes this a challenging text from which to learn.

Why should it take two weeks, anyway?I am learning bookbinding---by reading, practicing and getting help from my mentor. He suggested I purchase this book because he said it would simplify things for me. I have already ordered and looked through some other books he recommended that are very good. The minute I opened The Craft of Bookbinding and started looking through the pictures I said, "Oh! Now I get it!" I have already read through my other books, and have practiced making a few books, but I wasn't really understanding some of the steps in "forwarding". My mentor and I are not working side by side. I am being instructed through email conversations. This book SHOWS me what my mentor is trying to teach me.This is not a book about making books that are just looked at and admired. This is about the craft of bookbinding--making new books and repairing the good ol' ones you have that may have been ripped at the spine. I have a lot to learn, a long way to go. It will take years to say, "I bind books". But in the meantime, this book will always be on my workbench.
As far as the wording and logical structure of this book, I give it 5 stars. It is clear, and concise, and very valuable for any person looking to improve their bookbinding skills. As far as the image layout and organization, representation and quality is concerned, I'd give it 3 stars. Thus, 5 stars. I don't mind simple black and white illustrations, but I think they need to be consistent with the content. The way its organized, you sometimes have a tutorial through the photos and a separate, yet slightly related tutorial through the text. This can be confusing. It takes a lot of focus, but then again so does book binding. More modern books made by bigger publishers are definitely easier for a quick read, but this has great information and is extremely valuable.
Due to small size of book (6 in. by 91/4 in.) and poor quality photos which were blurred and so dark that details could not be seen. I definitely would not recommend it to a beginner.
not bad newer home tool and machines left out most stuff you have ti figure out to build. try looking for book sewing machine first. i would try another book.
The bad quality of the images is really disappointing. The written content may be good but having to force one's eyes to decipher the images makes you think you should have bought another book or looked it up in youtube. Waste of money.
It is a re-issue of an old book. For me this antique information (which really hasn't changed) is invaluable. Sometime when a book has a new cover and is re-issued is a disappointment.
