This book focuses more on the business side of game audio. If you are looking for a 'how to' guide for composing and sound design, this is not the book for you.However, for anyone interested in making a living by creating game audio content, this is a must read. Everything from networking, pricing your services, to standard contracts are covered. Of particular interest were the interviews throughout the book. Some more famous personalities, such as 'The Fat man' were interviewed, as well as some lesser known composers and sound designers. Some of them list what gear and software they use. I was surprised at both the spartan and the over the top set ups that some of these guys have.The disc that comes with the book has some very useful content. Perhaps the best was the demos provided. If you are serious about composing, listen to these demos, they will give you an idea of what skill level you will need if you want to get any jobs.Just a side note, at the end of the book Aaron suggests that you send him an email. I did, and got an encouraging response back from him. So he isn't just pretending to be a nice guy in the book, he really is!

There is a vast wealth of knowledge in this book which has proved incredibly useful for me. It covers everything from the process involved in game production to the business skills you will need to be successful not to mention what is required of a game audio professional. It also has a lot of interviews from working composers and sound designers who give very insightful information into how they became successful and their opinions on the industry, as well as the techniques they use. Note that it is not a guide on how to compose music, how to use DAW's, or detailed technical information on the physical process of recording. This is a book that covers the business side of the industry, from negotiating fees and salaries and gaining industry contracts to the legalities of writing for games and assumes a certain level of technical competency on the part of the reader.If you are remotely interested in making your way in the game audio industry, I would consider this book a "must have" for business research.

This book details everything from the very beginning of game audio in the 70s to today, it gives you history lessons, tips and tricks, software to recommend, has audio creator interviews and tons of cool things about game audio. I bought this for a game course I was taking and I did learn ALOT about game audio, it was also nice seeing how audio has changed from the 8 bit era to today.

This book has surprisingly little information in it for its size. Most of the chapters read like they are trying to use as many words as possible to say everything so they can stretch the book out. The information itself is mostly common sense information. Unfortunately I had to get it from class, and I'm sure that is the only reason it sells decently. Very little that we did in the course actually came from the book. It was more or less busy work to read the thing.

Mr. Marks uses an informative yet casual tone to keep you both interested and grinning as you turn from page to page. The information contained in this book is incredibly detailed and he gives a practical basis for all situations you could find yourself in, as well as some anecdotes, examples, and fun along the way. If only text books read like this...This book is definitely for someone who is interested in game audio of any level, regardless of if it's for the indie game or the AAA industry. It's best geared towards someone hoping to make a possible career out of music and sound for games and interested in learning what opportunities are available, as well as what the environment, pricing, and sorts of equipment in the industry are standard (although with the way technology is going, the tech part is getting outdated rapidly).

Marks provides a facinating peek inside the world of audio content development in the computer game industry. With a casual and friendly style, he covers a broad range of topics in his book, from basic equipment setup to negotiating contracts for freelance work (and much more, of course). Having recently become a freelancer myself, I found his advice both helpful and inspiring.All in all, this book bolsters Marks' credentials as a professional musician and businessman, and comes highly recommended to anyone interested in getting some excellent and no doubt hard-earned advice.

I bought this book on recommendation of a friend in the video game industry. Be away of what this book is and what it isn't. This is not a book on how to write audio for video games. This is an introductory book to audio and its role in the video game industry, and how to get into the industry. This book contains no technical information, as one might hope, about computer audio technologies such as Direct music or any others. If you already know how digital audio, MIDI, and mixers work then most of this book will bore you to tears. I have no doubt that, if you are looking for the information which is in this book it is good. The presentation is longwinded and very centered around the author rather than the topic itself it seems. At times, the book seems to lose all relevance to the audio industry. The interview with established video game artists are interesting, however I didn't find in them anything that I hadn't learned by playing around for a hours with recording techniques. In conclusion, there are better books on the market in all regards except for the video game audio industry notes. For that I have found no better source, however it is wrapped in information which I already know, and that I found nearly impossible to sit through.

This book WILL NOT teach you how to do anything. It's not instructional. It's more along the lines of composers talking about what they use and their success in the business. Which was basically what I needed to some degree.

Oh my God, where to start...Before buying this book, I ordered a sample and got totally hooked. I waited a long time before buying it (thank God), but when I saw that the price dropped, I had to get it.A few pages after the “sample”, the book got totally boring. I couldn’t feel the chemistry between Mason and Tanner. It was so boring to read about the development of their relationship. I have to admit, that I skipped a lot of pages, until I finally realized that I couldn’t keep reading it. I hate not finishing a book (specially when I paid for it), but this OMG, I could not keep going. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!I know the name of the book is “My Only Sunshine “, but did Mason had to say “my sunshine” all the time when referring to Tanner? It was so fake after just the first kiss.And the father... he was an ass, but everyone refer to him as Mason’s “daddy”. Even Mason!!! Couldn’t the author use another word like “dad” or “father” once in a while? It was just so out of context to use that word. Maybe I’m wrong, but daddy implies a loving, caring figure... and he was not.My advise...don’t waste your money or time in this book.

Haven't written a review in a long while, but this writer is worth the time. Well written, characters well developed, interesting story line. Especially liked the two main guys plus Ed and his wife Lucy. Wish the prices of the books weren't so high but when I have a little extra I will purchase another of this authors books!

This may have a gay love story in it, but the author only wants the readers to understand the horror, and feel sorry for family members that need to face the unbearable shock and shame of someone finding out their son or brother is gay. These are the characters the author wants us to feel for rather then the men who fall in love only to face severe hatred every day. This is a totally hateful story. I urge all non-haters to stay away

This is the first time I read anything by this Author. I enjoyed this story, I liked the characters. The storyline was wonderful.

Wonderful story, emotional and heart warming

I'm not a real cowboy romance fan, but this was exceptional! The flow and story were full and the characters were developed. The emotion was raw and real. I was drawn in from the second chapter and could not put it down. And I love the ending!! Great job!

This is a very tender love story between two damaged men. Tanner's life has been hard the last two years and his most recent experience has left him broken inside and out. Mason, like Tanner, has been through a lot , but unlike Tanner, his experience is still continuing because of his father. While I loved Tanner, I loved and hated Mason. The things he allowed his father to get away with were just horrible. I cannot even begin to imagine living with someone that hateful, especially a parent. I'm not sure if I think he's strong or weak to allow his family to use him the way they did, but I do know his father is rotting in hell. I don't know that if enduring what he did made him a better man, because I think he was a good man to begin with. I hated Mason's sister and I think the author describing her as "spitfire" instead of "b**ch" was generous. She, like her father, just used Mason. She knew, before she called him home to take care of their father, that their father had gone beyound just kicking Mason out as a teenager to show how much he hated him. As the only child he acknowledged and loved by their father, it was her responsibility, and ONLY her responsibility, to take of him. Mason and Tanner slowly falling in love was sweet and the times they were together were beautiful. Being in Tanner's head was an awesome experience. I'm glad that Mason and Tanner got their HEA, as some of the things they went through were cringe-worthy, but I would not have endured what Mason did for an evil father and a disgusting sister.

Fast paced, tender, easily drawn into the drama. Could not put down. Enjoyed reading. Will read other books by this author.

I notice that many of these Amazon customer reviews, both positive and negative, focus on the Gospel itself rather than Stevan Davies' commentary -- and IMHO they are missing the point. The Gospel of Thomas is a gem, and many translations of it are available online. But while Davies' translation seems as adequate as any, it is Davies' commentary that makes this book unique.... and not in a good way.Davies, according to the blurb and reviews, is a professor of religious studies, has studied the Gospel of Thomas for over 20 years, and has a website which is "the world's leading internet resource on the Gospel of Thomas". So I am mystified by the inadequacy and odd bias of many of his commentaries. He seems to take many of the obviously symbolic sayings literally, and interpret others based on some sort of personal agenda.For example:"Jesus said: Why wash the outside of the cup? Don't you know that the one who made the inside also made the outside?" -- Saying 89It's fairly obvious what this refers to symbolically (the priority of inner wisdom and spirituality over outer embellishment and empty religious gestures). But Davies apparently thinks that it refers to literally washing dishes, and states that "saying 89 may have been spoken sarcastically to say that washing vessels at all is foolish, just as washing the outside and not the inside is foolish." Say what?"When you ate dead things, you made them alive. When you arrive into light, what will you do?" -- Saying 11c"Jesus said: Wretched is a body depending on a body, and wretched is a soul depending on these two." -- Saying 87These rather obscure verses appear to have an esoteric meaning, which I hope to study further. But Davies believes they are both admonitions against eating animal flesh: "How does a body depend on a body? By eating it. A human body eats animal bodies for food. Therefore, a soul, we hear, is wretched if it depends on a carnivorous mode of life.... A vegetarian body is not one that depends on a body, so perhaps a soul dependent on it would not be wretched." Never mind the fact that if we are not randomly discarding all the canonical Gospels -- and most Christian Gnostics study both the canonical and the noncanonical Gospels -- Jesus Himself ate fish, hung out with fishermen, and distributed fish along with loaves to the multitudes who came to hear Him speak. I have no problem with Christian vegetarianism or veganism -- and I assume neither did Jesus, considering the possibility that He had spent some time with the Essenes -- but to interpret these two particular verses in that context is certainly stretching things.In a commentary on Saying 53, Davies contends that because Jesus was a Galilean and not a Judean, "A Galilean did not necessarily value the customs or treasure the laws of Judea." In other words, Jesus was not a practicing Jew! Huh? As far as any of the Gospels indicate, Jesus followed all the basic laws of Judaism, *except* when they conflicted with the greater good of compassion (e.g., gathering grain in a field -- or healing the sick -- on Shabbat).These are only a few examples of numerous incomprehensible exegeses of Thomas by Davies. That isn't to say his commentaries are without value -- some of them are very useful and spot-on. But they are marred by the ridiculous and wildly inaccurate ones -- perhaps due to some of Davies' personal biases, perhaps due to his weirdly selective inability to comprehend metaphor. So I've given this particular book three stars -- five for the Gospel itself and the fairly good translation, minus two for Davies' commentary. And I am still seeking a really good in-depth commentary on this important Gnostic Scripture.

7/10The Gospel of Thomas is one of those texts necessary to understand early Christianity and get a view of Jesus and of his message that is similar to the Canonical texts but essentially divergent from those. These sayings are intended to be cryptic on purpose so as to facilitate believers 's reflection, introspection and initiation into what is supposed to be the real message of Jesus. "In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus reveals his mysteries obliquely, indirectly, through parables and proverbs and obscure statements. Those worthy of the mysteries, therefore, are those who have proved themselves able to fathom them, seek their meaning, and find their interpretation. Jesus does not reveal his mysteries to you; he reveals the opportunity for you to find the meaning of those mysteries on your own." (p. 82)".THE BEAUTY OF THIS GOSPEL, TO ME> The Gospel of Thomas is very fresh and intimate. The canonical contextualisation we find in the other Gospels is absent from these sayings, so we have a rawer material and a rawer Jesus in a way. One feels as those disciples might have felt when hearing a remarkable man speaking in mysterious but profound ways.> The beauty of this Gospel also relies on the fact that it requires the reader's complete involvement. The aim of this Gospel is not to that of lecturing you on what to do, what not to do, good and evil, the aim is to make readers find our own way to enlightenment.> If one sets aside that these sayings are Jesus', the text still has great spiritual and intellectual juice. One of the most remarkable things about this Gospel, to me, is its modernity, and how can connect with modern spiritual seekers but also with old traditional forms of spirituality, as the wisdom embedded in this Gospel has a Universal nature. Agnostics, liberal Christians, mainstream Christians, Buddhists, Sufis and Native Indian Americans, among others, will certainly have no problems with the main messages conveyed by this collection of sayings. Conservative and fundamentalist Christians will have problem digesting these texts, so beware.> As a lover of Zen and of Jungian literature, I thought that some of these sayings are very Jungian; or said differently, having a general knowledge of Jungian Psychology sheds light on some of the most obscure sayings At the same time, the sayings share some similarity with the puzzling shocking nature of koans, as are they designed to appear nonsensical, shock and make you question what you are reading or hearing, question reality itself.THIS EDITION1/ INTRODUCTIONThe introductory part has different parts. Preface, Foreword, About the Gospel of Thomas, Introduction and Cast of Characters. Personally, I find the foreword by Andrew Harvey especially inspired, as he's able to connect this Gospel with different spiritual movements. The proper introduction is aimed to the general public, therefore, it covers all the basic one needs to know but without providing details or scholarly stuff to back up some of the things said. Nothing overly complicated is mentioned, but all the basics you know to know about this Gospel are there, and those would be more than enough for most people. I thought that the Introduction was acceptable and helpful. However, I also found some issues: ⤐ I found all the structure of the introductory part a bit chaotic. To me, it would have make more sense to start with the introduction, continue with the foreword and preface. However, that is impossible because there are at least two people writing the introductory bits, separately and without much communication among them, as some things are repeated. I would have eliminated the 'cast of characters' part (which is superficial and unnecessary unless you are totally unfamiliar with Christianity) and incorporated the part called the 'Gospel of Thomas' into the introduction. I would have also incorporated into the Introduction all the considerations that Davis makes in the notes devoted to the characteristics of the Gospel and not to the saying being commented upon; I would also do the same with the quotes by scholars that relate to the Gospel not to the saying commented, which happen to be included also in the notes.⤐ It's not clear who has written what. The foreword is by Andrew Harvey while the translation and notes are by Davis, so who wrote the rest? Ron Miller? The Cover of the hard copy seems to indicate that, but the book I have in my Kindle doesn't mention Ron Miller at all. I found all of this a bit confusing a a total turn off.⤐ Although the authors mention that they don't want to interpret the sayings for us, as this goes against the original nature of this Gospel, Harvey does the contrary in part of the foreword and Davis does the same, many times, in his commentary.2/ THE TRANSLATIONThe translation presented in this edition was done using the original Coptic and Greek manuscripts, so it is not a translation of a translation, as many others are. That is great. I found the translation acceptable and readable. I am not a translator of Greek or Coptic, of our Early Christian texts, but I'm familiar with translation and I know how difficult and frustrating is interpreting texts with anacolutha and/or destroyed parts of the text when no further context is available. Some of the notes point out the difficulties found by the translator (Davis in this case) to properly translate and interpret the sayings.3/ ANNOTATIONS AND COMMENTARYGenerally speaking, I found Davis' annotations helpful for the lay reader and for the general public. I especially like those notes that provide cross-references between themes, messages and episodes in the Gospel that relate to others mentioned in the canonical Gospels. I also liked that Davis was able to read the text as a whole, and give some interpretations taking into account the semantic integrity of the text as a whole.However, I found some of Davis' annotations preposterous, speculative, contradictory between themselves, and off point. Some of the notes extend unnecessarily explaining things that seem to be quite straightforward, while others that are not so as presented as such. Other times the sayings are taken literally and therefore the author finds himself with contradictions where there is none. In other occasions, the explanations aren't satisfactory, perhaps because they seem to be lacking something or perhaps because Davis has in mind something he is familiar with but is not explaining to the reader.BAD RENDERING FOR KINDLEA d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r for Kindle on Android, way better on Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle for PC.⤐ Kindle for Android. The endnotes are not linked forward, just backwards, from the note to the text and not vice versa. To check any note you have to go to the general index, press annotations and manually find the note of you interest. As there are 100+ notes, you can imagine how bothersome this can be. Besides, the call numbers in the body of the text appear partially hidden by the text when they are located at the end of a paragraph. In Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle for PC the notes are properly linked, but I cannot highlight or introduce my own notes in the note area! The call numbers appear where they should.⤐ KA: The whole pagination system is messed up. The introductory chapters have no pagination. The pages with the sayings are all no. 1. The pages with the annotations are numbered, but not according to correlative or natural numeration, as the sequence in pagination is not correct. Location numbers would have been more helpful, but they are nowhere to be found. Terrible! KP: no numeration, just locations, which is fine with me. &PC: locations + pagination, but the pagination suffers from the same problem as the KA.⤐ All formats: The Lateral menu has a typo, as well, charactrs instead of characters. MY SUGGESTIONS↬ Read the sayings per se, on their own, without any commentary, before reading the introduction and the annotations (endnotes). Do your own digging, spiritual or intellectual that might be on your own, as this is the primal intention of the Gospel. Then, read the book as a whole.↬ As this book is directed to the general public, it needs to be simple. You might want to get this Gospel properly contextualised in history and see how it fits in the history of Early Christianity. If that is your case, I highly recommend one of the Great Courses, Gnosticism: From Nag Hammadi to the Gospel of Judas, which is not only rigorous but very entertaining. On the other hand, as the Gospel itself is a translation, and biblical texts are far from being straightforward or easy to translate, I would recommend reading a work from a biblical translator, who highlights the difficulties and distortions that biblical translations can create; it is not devoted to this Gospel, but worth a read if you are the curious type: The Bible Doesn't Say That: 40 Biblical Mistranslations, Misconceptions, and Other MisunderstandingsIN SHORTThis edition and translation of the Gospel of Thomas is good overall for the general public. If you want something approachable and easy to understand, this edition will serve you fine. I have a preference for properly scholar books and editions, especially when talking about anything related to religious texts; if this is also your case, avoid this book. The book would have benefited from peer-reviewing before publishing, because it seems the editorial house published the book after basic editorial work. Sadly, some of the criticism is well-grounded. If you are just interested in the sayings per se, without further reading or noting, this will be a good book to start with, as the translation is good and acceptable.

Well written book which I had previously borrowed from the library. I purchased it because I felt it’s a good addition to the more familiar gospels of the New Testament. Whether one believes these are the actual words (teachings) of Christ or not, the words in these teachings show a different Christ then the one usually seen in the gospels, which is worth considering.

Davies provides a new fresh translation and just enough commentary to help the reader do their own pondering of the mystery sayings found in the Gospel of Thomas. The translation is certainly more readable than the SV (Scholars Version) which is more interested in the historical Jesus than it is in the Gospel of Thomas itself. Davies allows Thomas' Gospel to speak on its own terms, and in doing so liberates for us another voice that witnesses to a part of the early church community.I found Davies' explanation of the two creations very helpful in understanding some of the logia in Thomas' Gospel. Sometimes, though, I found myself wishing for more commentary than is provided. For example, I hoped for more references to better understand the Greek and Coptic texts.Overall, though, this is a wonderful book for devotional meditation, for better understanding of, and a greater appreciation for this ancient gospel.

When I first saw this cookbook for cast-iron skillets, I assumed Lodge had published another cookbook. The Tennessee-based manufacturer of fine cast-iron pots and pans has two wonderful cookbooks on the market. After buying this one and reading through the opening chapters, I think my assumption is incorrect.But this is still a pretty good cookbook. There is enough variety in the recipes to please any palate. And there are enough recipes to allow the reader to skip over some offerings. On a rainy afternoon in south-central Texas, I put together one of the recipes, Braised Beef in Wine Sauce, for dinner tonight. It's in the oven as I write this review.I gave the book and author Lisa Brian only four stars for a couple of reasons.The first is that too often she's a bit indefinite in some recipes. One calls for a "Half carton of buttermilk." Well, I can buy a pint or a quart of buttermilk at my grocery store. Which is it? And she rarely tells you what size skillet to use. I assume a 10- or a 12-inch for most recipes, but there is a difference in volume between the two sizes.The other thing is the table of contents. The recipes are nicely grouped, but I would love a hyperlink from the recipe listing in the table of contents to the actual page the recipe is on. The author and/or publisher do that for the group headings, but why not for the individual recipes?Neither of my nits is reason enough to pass on this book, however; and the good advice on cast-iron care -- plus all of the great recipes -- is a boon for folks new or intimidated by cast-iron.

I was always terrified of cast iron cookware. I had tried once or twice to keep one in condition and totally failed. For all of you with cast iron phobia, this book is your salvation. The entire first portion of this book deals with cast iron cookware itself. You are taught how to properly season it so that it is non-stick, how to revive an antique piece, how to maintain it (a lot easier than you have been told), enameled cast iron vs. non-enameled (including the relative costs of each), what you can cook well in it and, more importantly, what you shouldn't cook in it. It also deals with a lot of myths circulating about cast iron cookware. If that was all that this book covered, it would have been an excellent reference book for anyone wanting to cook with cast iron. But that isn't where it stopped. After all the basics have been covered, the book continues with excellent recipes covering just about everything you might want to cook in it. When I first read the ingredient list on the first few recipes, I thought it contradicted everything that we were just taught about not cooking with acids, wine, etc. in cast iron...and then I looked at the instructions, and you were told to use enameled cast iron for those recipes. The vast majority of the recipes are not for enameled cast iron, although you could certainly use that if you own some. The recipes are not just campground recipes either (although those are there also). There are some very gourmet recipes done easy there, too. You couldn't ask for a more thorough book on cast iron, so if you were phobic, like I was, this is the book for you. I do feel obligated to tell you that this book was given to me requesting, but not requiring, a review. That fact did not affect what I have written. If it was awful, I would have said so. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.

If you are a visual person who enjoys seeing beautiful colors jumping from the page that makes you want to jump in the kitchen and cook something this is not the book for you. The information appears to be accurate but the newspaper like pages just don't do it for me.

i have been using this book from the first day i purchased it. love it and make at least once a week recipe from t. i do not bake, but that showed me i could. every recipe i have made has been totally fool proof and explained accurately.

If you've been cooking for years, this isn't really a book for you. Many of the recipes found in this book I could make easily without looking at a recipe. But if you are a newer cook who is looking to kick it up a notch, I would recommend this book.Least favorite part of the book: the content in this front about the history and background of cast iron. Favorite part of the book: the breakfast chapter.

This is just the book that I was searching for!Things I love about this book:1 It teaches one how to clean and season and care for Cast Iron Cookware. In this book there are step by step on how to do this.2 Great advice on using heat correctly on Cast Iron Cookware.3 All kinds of information about thus I did not kniw.4 Delicious recioe....so many them. The Roast recipes and Chicken recipes are my favorite. I followed them step by step and the food was great tasting and so tender.5 This is my go to book as far as cooking with Cast Iron us concerned. If you are new to cooking with Cast Iron, I highly suggest this book.

Wonderfully thorough book. It tells you everything from how to season your cast iron and care for it to some absolutely delicious desserts. It's definitely worth picking up. The recipes are solid and good additions to my own cooking.

Did not care for lack of pictures, I like to see what the final dish is supposed to look like.

I've worked on the Google campus for 11 years, and have seen first-hand the impact OKRs have had on the company. John Doerr is single-handedly responsible for bringing OKRs to Google. One of the biggest complaints I hear from founders about OKRs is that it works for Google because, well, Google is *Google*. By letting you hear from founders in their own words - from small startups to fast-growth startups to non-profits - John makes it easy for the reader to model how OKRs could work at their company. It's not just Google: Doerr shows how any ambitious, outcome-oriented organization can benefit from implementing OKRs.Anyone who wants to understand what makes Silicon Valley tick will learn a lot from this book. So many of the giants from the last fifty years are captured in these pages – as relayed by John, their commitment and ambition shine through. As a long time management scholar (34 years in academia) I have to say that this is one of the best books on management I have ever read. A great deal of nonsense and hype has been written about organizational leadership. But Doerr gets right to the core issue--given that you have useful ideas, how do you actually get them implemented? He goes into enormous detail about the use of the OKR's (Objectives and Key Results) which he introduced to Google. He gives numerous examples of how they should be used to achieve success. Many case studies are described but the key point is that Doerr is not a one, narrow technique (hey, goals are good) guru. Rather he induces a set of principles that should be followed in the use of OKR's if success is to be attained. He first learned of this method at Intel and then shared his idea with more than 50 companies. He has worked both as an executive and a venture capitalist. He is firmly tied to the real world of business. If you want to know how to lead successfully, this should be your starting point.

A great introduction to the origins of OKRs, followed by many examples of how companies and a nonprofit used OKRs to improve organizational effectiveness.For some weird reasons, I did not enjoy reading the examples very much. Probably because of a mismatch between the book title and my expectations.I was expecting more of a guide to defining great OKRs within an organization - more of a handbook or practical best practices kind of resource. Such as, how do you define KRs for a software development product? How do you balance between top-down and bottom-up ideas in the OKRs definition process? Etc.In the end, I felt that some of the examples, especially the OKRs in some of the examples, were lacking in terms of practical details. They were more like stories to demonstrate the versatility of OKRs. And some of the KRs did not seem very measurable to me.The resources at the end was useful.Overall, I felt that the book could have been more concise, and the resources at the end could be elaborated more.

I particularly liked that as the book progresses, it provides clear examples of how to overcome the nuances of implementing OKRs. I felt my OKR-setting muscles getting stronger by the end of the book.

I had read a lot of reviews about this book, and nudity was mentioned quite a bit. If you have ever been to a life drawing class you would have seen some of these views of nude bodies. I can see why some folks were surprised by the poses, but when you sit in a circle around a live model at class you don't get to pick your view, and sometimes you end up drawing some interesting parts in strange perspectives. I really needed a reference book for drawing bodies for manga characters, so this was exactly what I was looking for. The detail really helps me alot.

I have eleven How to Draw Manga books, and have been using them to guide my illustration techniques and general knowledge. I set out looking to draw people, specifically female characters, for the purpose of creating product renderings specific to military, LEO, and combat attire. After checking into several figure drawing books and disliking nearly all of them I finally decided to give this book a try. Here is what I found:The How to Draw Manga series won't tell you how to draw. You have to find your own way to use the information in these books and without a specific goal and a lot of practice you're not going to get your money's worth. This book in particular contains a lot of fleshed-out images of people in a variety of positions along with "wireframe" illustrations. These "wireframes" (my term, not the book's) break down the anatomical parts into basic shapes, then positions them according to the fully fleshed-out image next to them. This allows you to practice by drawing the wireframes and adding detail from there. The fleshed-out imagery consist of naked females and guys in underwear, which is weird for an anatomy book because I would have expected everyone to be naked. However, nudity is limited to butts and nipples, as it is assumed you actually will use these on your characters and won't be needing explanations of how to draw genitalia.I basically went through this whole book and replicated all the wireframes, which built up my ability to draw a proportionally accurate figure with no detail. I then moved to More How to Draw Manga 4: Mastering Bishoujo Characters (go to that product for my review of it) and found that I was able to jump right into working on final character drawings. I'll come back to this book in the future for reference and to practice drawing nude/semi-nude figures with an emphasis on bone and muscle contours.In all I like this book and am very happy I found a use for it. Some people don't like it because it's not "how to draw, but with a good approach you can find the best way to apply this book to your drawing skills. Some people are also unhappy about the nudity, but frankly I'd be shocked if it didn't have any nudity. In all it is definitely a top-notch resource for learning to draw the human form.

The book offers a lot of reference drawings, but fails to actually offer any sort of guidance for beginners. I would not recommend this to beginners who are looking to learn anatomy, but rather those who already know anatomy basics and need an extra source of reference material. Personally, I would recommend "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" by Andrew Loomis if you're just getting into drawing the human figure - manga/anime style or not.

I like the detailed instructions and the various styles shown. This has explanations of how anatomy would work, making it very easy to create characters and scenes based on realistic movement that is believable. Great for aspiring manga artists.

This book explains the way muscles and body parts correspond to one another in actions and poses very well. Short tidbits give insight on overlooked details such as when the outlines of bones are revealed or hidden, or the small webbing between fingers, and much more.There is some nudity but that is all part of art and helps give you a better understanding. I recommend reading this and not just looking at it for the pictures.

I feel that I'm a decent manga artist, but unfortunely I am unable to link to my artwork as a demonstration due to guidelines. I have 3 other books which are How to Draw manga for Male Characters, Female Characters, and Bishoujo Around the World. I was impress with all three of them, but with Bodies and Anatomy I was extremely disappointed.First of all, other than a very few anime pictures, it does not even feel like an manga book at all. Like what someone else mentioned, it doesn't even have manga proportions. The book might as well not have manga in the title and I still wouldn't be able to tell that this was a manga book.I was completely fooled by the cover of the book. The drawings inside do not even match the quality of the cover. The bodies on the cover are manga, the bodies within the book are not! Previous How to Draw Manga books had similarities with the cover and the content inside. At the end of the book, there is also no individual drawings from various artist.The written information provided with the drawings are subpar when compared to the other 3 Manga books that I've mentioned earlier. Sometimes it goes into useless details and other times, it there isn't enough description. For example, it throws a few pictures of the ear and then the nose, but never says a single word about it. I would have liked for it to at least mentioned how it compare and contrast from human to anime form. Again, the other manga books mentioned the difference and similarities.Also I have to question the source of the book as well. Almost every other How to Draw Manga book has a japanese author, but this one does not. It's source is 'The Society for the Study of Manga Techniques'. I can only guess that its origin is nonjapanese and it shows just like every other nonjapanese How to Draw Anime type book out there. Something is wrong if an amateur artist like myself can draw equal or better than what is provided in the book.I would have returned the book the same day I received it if it weren't for the fact that the shipping to return it is almost half the cost of the book. In the end, I feel very cheated and do not want others to be fooled in the same way. An unforunate lesson I learn from this is that you can't judge a book by its cover.
