I like "In Easy Steps" books because they give the basics to get you going quickly. I like to learn by building on basics and being experienced in programming (as an amateur) I understand a lot of the foundational information. I need the nuances of specific languages. BTW ... Excel VBA is my favorite. But in the case of "PHP & MySQL", it has not been "easy steps".Too many software books are too complicated to get started on ... kinda like asking the time is but instead of an answer you are given a book to build a clock (sometimes an atomic clock!). In Easy Steps is not a book on building a clock but gets you going in the basics so you can build from there.The problems I have with this book (PHP & MySQL in easy steps: Covers MySQL...) are the ratholes that need to be chased so early in the book before I can get back to the book's original intentions. The book and its website lacks "what to do when things don't work" ... or at least some general guidance.Here are three:1) Stuck at page 11 when "localhost" didn't work as the book said. It did not display the webpage as it should have. The trouble is that there is no guidance as to what to do when it didn't work.1-Solution) For me, World Wide Web Publishing Service (WWWPS) was most likely the problem since it was using port 80. WWWPS is pre-installed and automatically turned on in Windows 10. When I turned it off, localhost worked. But it is TBD if I broke anything turning it off. So I may need to visit that rathole again.2) Stuck at page 23 ... getting error message "MySQL server has gone away". OK... that's not expected ... so why did it go away? How do I get it back? What to do? As such, I'm down another rathole visiting a bunch of web pages until I find one that points me in a direction I can use!2-A) There is a discrepancy between the downloaded code and the book (page 22) relative to the connect_db.php file (as of Sept 20 2018). Line 4 has an "@" sign in the download version. With the "@" included, I got one error message. Without the "@" I got much better error messages (three different error messages that lead me to the solution as described next).3) Still stuck at page 23.3-Solution) The current version of PHP is 7.2.8 (Sept 22 2018) and generally you are advised to install the latest version for any software. But there is a bug in 7.2.8 that is causing the problem encountered at page 22. Reverting to 7.2.4 fixes the problem (7.2.4 is what the book uses and was probably the most current available at its writing))>> For more information, search the bugs.php site for 76660 "Bug #76660 Cannot connect to mysql 8 using Php 7.2.8"In all honesty, number three is not the fault of the book. But when you are getting started, any trouble is a big deal and you are at a loss as to where to start looking. Yes, software and the systems they operate in are complex. When things work well it is great. It is when things don't work that we need guidance.So far I'm glad I got the book (and I'm no longer stuck) since it presents the basics and is getting me started. If there was better online support, I think this could be a five-star book.I've bumped my rating from a 3 to 4 star rating.

I must say i wish i found this series months ago. I tried to learn programming previously using those big 1,000-page technical books. All those books did was confuse me.This book explains in one page what the large books do in 20 pages. The format of the book makes it easy to follow, using color-coded programming code. One page explains the concept and the next is a coding exercise. The code that the book asks you to type up is simple enough to show you what is going on. A screenshot of the result is shown as well, at the bottom of the page.The book is light on programming jargon so the concept is simple enough for non-programmers to get it. Even if you don't get it, just re-read and glance at the code on the following page and it will be easy to pull the meaning out of the text.The book is rather small and light, which makes a good print book for a learner on-the-go. I believe it is around 192 pages long, inclusive of the index.I will be looking at more books in this series thanks to this book.The only I wish this author did with the book was notate how to get set up with non-local web server, such as a paid monthly/annually web server. I adapted the book's code and got the MySQL to verify its version, based on the MySQL exercise in the beginning of the book.Many people prefer XAMP for local web server for PHP, the book uses Abyss Web Server.

Exactly what I needed! For beginners like myself I find it does a great job breaking down and giving examples for using PHP and MySQL together.My background is 13 years HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, 3 years with WordPress, 5 years with databases (Started with Access, then learned how to use PHPMyAdmin in my webhosts' CPanel to tweak some things with WordPress... that's when things started to click for me, in terms of how Databases and Websites work together). If you are trying to play "catch-up" check out HTML, CSS, and SQL classes on codecademy.com first.I've always wanted to make a form on my own - now I can, and more!I know I will continue to use this book as a reference.

Love the way every two pages consist of a lesson and exercise.Also, a list of some of my bug fixes:"Chapter 2: Describing dimensions"- Make sure you space the brackets "[ ]" in the second foreach loop or the brackets will be interpreted literally as a part of the array not a separate value."Chapter 4: Validating for data"- For testing email I used "/^[_A-Za-z0-9-]+(\.[_A-Za-z0-9-]+)*@[A-Za-z0-9-]+(\.[A-Za-z0-9-]+)*(\.[A-Za-z]{2,})$/" for my pattern variable.

This is my second PHP book. The first one was about 500 pages and after reading it for a while, I was more confused than when I started. PHP & MySQL in Easy Steps is a condensed book on PHP that is very clear and accurate. It uses everyday words and not so much of the confusing jargon you are used too. The chapters in this book are small so I have been taking them one by one and working the examples on my computer. I have learned more in reading and working half of the examples in this book than I ever have with any of the other PHP books and websites. Great job Mike McGrath! Love it! I'm gonna buy them all!

This book covers a lot of different scenarios and makes them very easy to understand. I also like that since I bought a digital version of the book, I can just type in what I'm looking for and there's usually an example of exactly what I'm trying to do.

General Janis Karpinski served in the military for over 25 years. She was an Intelligence Commander in Iraq and the only female commander to serve there in the Army Reserves. She attended West Point and the US Army War College, and served in the first Gulf War where she received a Bronze Star. This book was recommended to me by an Army Reservist with the 800th Military Police Brigade who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.In February 2003, Janis Karpinski thought the army was "paying her back with the greatest assignment of her career". She was promoted to Brigadier General and would command the 800th Military Police Brigade...First, the facts:FACT: In 1977, a US Army Recruiter "sold" George and Janis Karpinski on a "joint military career". He told them "the Army had a policy of keeping married officers together. They could travel and see the world arm-in-arm." They should have known it was too good to be true. This would not be the last time that the US Army blatantly lied to Janis Karpinski...FACT: General Karpinski won a Silver Star for her service in Operation Desert Shield.FACT: As Major Karpinski, she worked directly with the UAE's President's wife, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak — who was head of the UAE's Women's Federation — to establish a women's military training program in the United Arab Emirates. Only women can train women in Arab countries. Major Karpinski's team included one Major and nine non-commissioned officers (NCOs). These women were recommended by their Commanding Officers (COs) and the NCOs had all been Drill Sergeants. Major Karpinski would spend four years immersed in this program.FACT: After landing in Tampa from a business trip in October 2002, Karpinski noticed her day planner and her wallet were stolen when she stopped at a grocery store. She reported her loss to the police and American Express. She went to the Post Exchange to cash a check, but had no ID. The only option she had was to buy a few items and write a check for $50.00 over the cost. While picking up a few items, her cell phone rang and she dug into her purse to answer it, a guard saw her remove her bottle of lotion, then put it back in her purse. She paid for her purchases and received her $50.00. Upon leaving, the guard detained her and asked her to go to his office. She thought it was because she had no ID card. He said he saw her putting something from the shelf into her bag and singled out her moisturizer — which was only half full (she explained that she used it on flights and pointed out that it obviously was only half full). Nonetheless, he filled out a report and kept the moisturizer. In a couple of weeks, she received a call from McDill's Legal Office. The woman apologised "profusely, saying she examined the bottle and recognized that it could not have been stolen from the exchange." She thought the matter was dropped. Years later, the unsubstantiated allegation of "shoplifting" became one of the Army's charges against her.FACT: "When things went wrong at Abu Ghraib prison, nobody stood out as a more convenient target than the female General who looked out of place from the perspective of all those male warriors."FACT: GITMO (Guantanamo Bay) had eight hundred Military Policemen (MPs) to guard six hundred eighty prisoners. In comparison, In Iraq, there were fewer than three hundred MPs to guard seven thousand prisoners at Abu Ghraib alone (there were seventeen prisons in Iraq).FACT: Major Janis Karpinski always gives credit to her soldiers: "My Reserve soldiers marched into that mess, made a decent place out of it against all odds, completed their mission, and left with honor; mourning their fallen comrades. Most of us survived ... The 800th MP Brigade plunged in to fight it with whatever people and resources they had. We made do, we focused on the essentials. If we could bring the situation under control, our successors would have an easier time with it ... When the 800th reached Iraq, only one in seventeen prisons under our authority was functional (when Saddam knew war was coming, he emptied all of the prisons into the streets — except for political prisoners — those he just shot). When General Karpinski and the 800th left, "thanks to the determination of my 3,400 soldiers and the hard work of prisons chief, Bill Irvine, all seventeen were functional." At the same time, she is very hard on herself, wondering how these abuses happened, if she should have seen the atrocities coming, why she had no idea what was going on, what was the full and real story of what happened at Abu Ghraib et cetera...FACT: "An overwhelming majority of the 800th Military Police Brigade maintained their military discipline." I believe that General Karpinski more than maintained her military discipline and did an amazing job with her 3,400 soldiers.FACT: The Pentagon relieved General Karpinski of duty, but no-one bothered to tell her. Instead, they held a press briefing to make that announcement. The first she knew about it was when a reporter from NBC called her after the Pentagon briefing and asked for her reaction to having been relieved of her command, all she could say was that it was a surprise to her. In spite of having General Karpinski's cell phone number, her home telephone number, her brother's telephone number and her email address, the Pentagon insisted that they could not contact her. Apparently, they could not pick up a telephone and dial her number like the reporter had done. When she asked how they attempted to contact her — which number(s) had they called or did they email her — she was stonewalled. It was obvious they had never attempted to contact her and in my opinion, they held the press conference only to humiliate and embarrass her further.FACT: All of the final charges against General Karpinski had one common denominator: not one of them had anything to do with the treatment of Iraqi detainees in cell block 1A of Abu Ghraib prison. She was formally relieved of duty, as she had expected. General Janis Karpinski was turned into a scapegoat. She had made the mistake of being a female General in a "man's Army". Those higher up in her chain of command were not sanctioned at all — their careers stayed on track, they faced no charges for their appalling behaviour. Why? Simply because they were men who always referred to the Army as "my Army." It was just as much General Karpinski's Army! She had more than proven herself worthy.FACT: "President Bush delivered a blow I had not expected — vacating my promotion to General and demoting me back to a Colonial." In this reader's opinion, Bush should be ashamed of himself. The Army had already investigated charges against her and taken steps to discipline her, this was an unnecessary slap in the face after being a career soldier with an exemplary record!I know Bush was the "Commander in Chief" and needed to flex his muscles as such. I guess he felt like he had to be seen as doing something about that "awful situation that took place over there", but he should have chosen those higher up the chain of command to punish — like any of the MEN of higher rank that she would approach for assistance, only to be told "make it work, Janis!" (they were not even professional enough to address General Karpinski by her rank).FACT: General Janis Karpinski and Colonial George Karpinski served a combined total of fifty-five years in the US Army.General Karpinski writes "It is immensely difficult to accept these verdicts of my government and, yes, my Army when I know in my heart I did not deserve them." This reader could not agree more!This book and others like it (I could give you a few titles) should be read by the same public that condemned General Janis Karpinski and the soldiers in her command. We were so ready to believe the media sh*tstorm and their attempts to condemn everyone in the military that served at all the prisons. That will never happen because those few "bad apples" overshadowed all of the hard work of the majority of all soldiers — active duty to reserves. The treatment of this honorable officer was uncalled for — her higher ups (like Generals Sanchez and Miller — and even Donald Rumsfeld) should have been disciplined, but those men never faced charges (ONLY because they were men).

Page 221: “ … Abu Ghraib, playground of American abusers. No caricature could be more unjust to the thousands of American soldiers who served honorably at Abu Ghraib …”Page 67: “I wanted to serve with professional soldiers, thanking God that the Vietnam era of dope-smoking draftees was over.”General Karpinski can dish it out but can’t take it. In one short, sweeping sentence, she dismissed an entire generation of hundreds of thousands of Vietnam era veterans without any further elaboration. Coming from a flag officer, it carries a significant sting of insult. Putting it in print etches it in stone. It was challenging for some of us to read past page 67.One can legitimately question her tendency to jump to conclusions and over-simplify a situation.Nevertheless, she provides great insight into what it takes for a female to break into a man’s Army and advance through the ranks.Her work in the United Arab Emirates was most praiseworthy.Her experiences as a “regular” vis-à -vis a “reservist” were enlightening.The dilemma for any member of the military in dealing with directives from above (orders) is finely illustrated in her experiences at Abu Ghraib. She was a scapegoat caught in a political quagmire (ironically similar in many ways to Vietnam). She was trapped in a dysfunctional chain of command that was severely broken. Army Intelligence was inserted within her area of command but without command. Her command was a corps of Army Reserve Military Police throughout Iraq that included all of its prisons. She fell victim to General Miller’s advisement to higher authorities to carry out illegal torture as his command was doing in Guantanamo. In Abu Ghraib, the difficulties were compounded because there were many more prisoners (including civilian for civil, not war crimes) and far less staff. Interrogators inserted to torture could be government civilians (CIA) or even private contractors. Military Police under Karpinski’s command were, unbeknownst to her, advised to soften the prisoners up for interrogation. Add to this she was placed in charge of prisons in Iraq where Abu Ghraib, the worst of them, was frequently under hostile (mostly mortar) fire, overcrowded with decrepit conditions, and receiving little or no logistical or defensive support such as “regular” units would receive. Her assignment was impossible without taking her legitimate concerns above General Sanchez, a matter easier said than done, especially since the war crimes the U.S. was committing had the blessings all the way to the top.Her story was riveting and tragic, similar to Vietnam. The debate over an all volunteer army vis-à -vis a draft is for another story. She was a patriotic and courageous officer deserving of her achievements and undeserving of her ultimate fate of being a scapegoat to a dysfunctional conflict in which she clearly became ensnared in a catch-22.

This book gives General Karpinski's side of the story. It's excellent, and I think it's honest. She says three times at least that she takes responsibility for what she did wrong, and on two occasions lists mistakes she made. Everyone agrees that she did not condone or generate the torture that occurred at Abu Ghraib (otherwise her punishment would have been much more severe than mere demotion) but instead was entirely blindsided by it, in part because of a mixed up chain of command. That is not in dispute; her book merely gives the details, from her point of view. It's one of the best ghost-written biographies I've ever read, about an important current issue and, given that it is a piece of advocacy, frank and complete. Reviewers who say she does not accept her share of the blame have not read the book.For some reason I can't give the book the four stars I meant to. I just tried to edit my review to change the star rating, and failed. I rate it four stars.

This book is a delight to read because even though I don't have a full understanding of how the army works Mrs. Karpinski does a great job of laying it out for me. It's great to read this strong woman's honest, first-hand account of her position in the army. She has an interesting story to tell that if it isn't read, it wouldn't be heard. I think that the scandal that occured at Abu Ghraib is misunderstood because of the select amount of information that has surfaced through media coverage. There is alot more to the story and when searched for, anyone would be shocked about what happened before the incident was leaked to the media and how it was handled afterwards. This book is a really easy read, and an eye opener.

You have to be a part of the solution because even in the top cancer treatment centers in the country, physicians and hospitals drop the ball. I know because I went to one of the top places (Ivy League, etc.) and received less than “standard care”. This is not to knock all of them, but in every profession there are some practitioners who for the good of the client, should not be in the business. Arm yourself with this book.The normal cancer center approach is to have three specialists: a surgeon, an oncologist and a radiation oncologist. They also have a nutritional department there, but sometimes the specialists ignore everything nutritionally, a huge mistake. There is strong statistical evidence of the effects (both good and bad) of nutritional and environmental inputs. Geo takes a giant step towards making you aware of them. Modern science is a miraculous gift and we are blessed to have it. Pair it with a holistic formula for treating the whole person and you complete the loop.I would recommend this book to all the men in my life and the people who love them. It seamlessly complements the sea of information and misinformation out there. Too many people self-doctor themselves with the motley collection of personal, often angry, misinformed rants on the internet. This inexpensive book is a valuable resource and is well worth your time and attention.

If this is your first foray into prostate health, this book is a good primer for the novice or lay person. Unfortunately, if you already you have prostate cancer, this book will not give you the foresight you'll need to make an educated decision on therapy options. I'd rate this as prostate health 'lite'. It's a start, but it's just the tip of the iceberg and I believe there are better, more comprehensive books out there on the subject.

Nothing in this book or the author’s CaPLESS program can be relied upon to be objective information. That’s because in the case of a few supplements that the author recommends, there are existing credible studies that suggest they actually pose a danger to prostate cancer patients when taken in supplement form. Vitamin E and selenium are examples. The author didn’t mention a thing about the contradictory science, even though it is fairly high profile. In the case of green tea extract, there is actually credible science that suggests perhaps nobody should be taking it. It is my opinion and that of others that the author was irresponsible at best to not have even mentioned the studies that do not support taking these supplements. The book was published in 2016, so it is not a matter of it being out of date.

This book is a very good place to start if you've just found out that you might have prostate cancer. Dr. Espinosa is highly qualified, and is a better source of information than random websites. He's clear, straightforward, and down to earth in his recommendations. What the book does not do is to advise you on treatment options; candidly, that's such a tricky subject and so individualized that I don't think any book could provide much help on the subject. But this book tells you everything else, which is pretty helpful, whether you're in a pre-treatment, post-treatment, or no-treatment phase. Regarding editing and formatting, there's room for improvement. Overall, though, the book tells you what you need to do to help yourself, and that's no small feat.

I was never a huge Sex Pistols music fan. That said, as a fan of punk music and lifestyle, I was very aware of, and always a bit curious to know more about them. I coincidentally became a big Steve Jones fan when visiting Los Angeles and stumbled onto "Jonesies Jukebox" radio show when the now shuttered Indie 101 was still on the LA airwaves.Steve’s knowledge of music is foregone conclusion but I found his understated British humor to be highly infections.Thus, I couldn't wait to get my hands on "Lonely Boy" when I heard about it. I was not disappointed. Everyday I'd look forward to my allocated reading time so I could catch up on Steve's storytelling. At times sad, but most of the time funny and always brutally honest, Steve doesn't hold back and let's readers in on the most intimate parts of his childhood and his often painful, journey through adulthood (both in and out of the band), with real, raw emotion.Fans of Sex Pistols will love this book of course, but if you are not a fan, trust me, don't let that stop you. The subject is fascinating regardless of your musical tastes. This book was hard to put down. I highly recommend it to anyone in need of a good read.

Hilarious, profane, occasionally mind-boggling, and always brutally honest, Lonely Boy was clearly not ghost-written. I've always loved Steve as a personality as well as a guitarist... and this book explains why in no uncertain terms.This might be the most enjoyable rock autobio I've ever read - and I've read 'em all. Vive le Jonesy!

Steve Jones' journey through his life with the early success and demise of The Sex Pistols. Interesting career with a happy ending. One of the best rock autobiographies ever written.

"There's not a shelf in the library high enough for this s**t, is there? This is the good stuff you just don't get from the guy from Nickelback (at least, not as far as I know)."-If you like music, buy this...Easily went through 10 chapters in one sitting.

It was fun learning about Steve's clobber and all the different toffs' gaffs he kipped in. I like the musical spontaneous combustion that was the Sex Pistols as much as the next person, but none of them are welcome to stay in my house. I loved John's books but I think I liked this better. It's a better history of the Pistols because, remember, Johnny came lately to them. The Pistols evolved from Steve and Paul's earliest thrashings on whatever gear Steve managed to steal for them. Which was considerable. When you think about it, the best, or most influential and original, bands are ones where they all learned to play their instruments together and STAYED together. John, Paul and George were at it by around 14, 15, and 16. There's really just a handful of bands where there's them, and then there's everyone else. There was The Beatles, and then there was everyone else. For "psychedelia" there was Hendrix, and then there was everyone else. And not just for the guitar-playing but the records. The three albums in his lifetime. There was Elvis, and there was everyone else. Major similarities really to Elvis, Scotty and Bill (and later DJ) and the Sex Pistols. Bass, guitar, and drums working with an untried singer finding their way as they went along. As far as "punk" (if you must) goes, there was The Sex Pistols and there was everyone else.

Fantastic book!! I love the Pistols and love hearing Jonesies' side of the story. Johnny (Rotten) Lyndon is always rewriting history from his perspective. I read it in a few days and then let an older coworker read it too. He couldn't put it down. Honest, straight forward writing with a lot of English slang I'm still trying to figure out. All the happenstance stuff leading up to the Pistols and then all of the drama and wreckage of being 22 years old and being completely washed up. Loved it- Sex, drugs, & rock n roll!!! And maybe even a happy ending??? Even if u don't care for the Sex Pistols, this is a great read. And he confesses to all the stuff he stole when he was a kid; He might be the only guy to write a best seller and lose more money than he earned from paying back all the gear he ripped off. Jonesie names names and isn't afraid to make himself look like a jerk. Plus the struggle of getting sober and being a sex addict. What a character and what a book. Highly recommended!! Oi Oi Oi!!!

This book was incredible! What an amazing story. Funny. Rock n roll. I felt like I could hear Jonesy's voice reading it to me. In true fashion, he holds nothing back. It's all the filth and the fury you would expect to hear about being Sex Pistol! Highly recommend.

I have anticipated this book for a long time. I love Steve Jones. I'm so glad I was able to read his story and I'm thankful he shared his story. I had listened to his radio show for quite some time and I am very excited to learn more about him. There was always kind of a mystery to him and I wanted to know more. I'm glad he finally was able to put out his side of the story and the details about his life and upbringing as horrendous as they are I think he can and has helped people who have gone through similar situations feel like they aren't alone.

Most of the wagons included in this book are drawings from The Hub, a coachbuilders' magazine from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s.As a scale HD vehicle modeler, I would highly recommend this book as a reference source. It does have a few engineering drawings that could be used to build from (a nice set of plans for the Hansom Cab are included); most prints give the diameter of the wheels, which can then be used to scale the drawings. There are quite a few pictures as well of very interesting commercial and trade vehicles. Since these drawings came from The Hub, the designers recommendations for painting and trimming the vehicle is listed with almost all the wagons.Very interesting from a historical perspective as well.

A real eye opener into the past. Fully illustrated with large black and white photos and line drawings with plenty of information on each wagon. You will really understand the importance of "horse power" in the old days.. Buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

Great book with lots of wonderful illustrations of horse-drawn vehicles. A must have for any history lover of that era. It is very educational.

We all know that until cars became inexpensive and popular--and roads improved to the point where every drive wasn't a spine-jostler--America moved literally by horsepower. This book, clearly illustrated with large engravings, photographs, and drafters' plans, portrays the broad assortment of (mostly) non-private vehicles that were used during the 19th and early 20th centuries, which might be called the heyday of the type. Beginning with an assortment of two-wheeled carts, it goes on to show bandwagons, freight wagons, "trucks" (a term used for the largest kind of four-wheelers), specialized store and delivery wagons (many whimsically shaped or decorated), hearses, ambulances, sheepherders' wagons, gypsy wagons, peddlers' wagons, food wagons, farm wagons, chuck wagons, log wagons, coal and ice wagons, windlass trucks, drays, express wagons, stagecoaches, city omnibuses, horsecars, cabs, fire engines, street sprinklers, mail wagons, moving vans, even a tree-transplanting wagon that could carry as much as 14 tons! Over 240 vehicles are shown, each with a description, and there's also a section at the back showing the kinds of harness used with them. Anyone interested in this subject must add this title to his collection without delay.

A fun and informative little book. Most insightful on pre motor transport technology. Most fascinating for those interested in history or in Horse drawn Transport.Some of these little carriages, such as the double decker omnibus and the tree transport, blow the mind in regards to the genius of our forbears in how they applied the technology they had. Then there are the dump wagons.A must for any library of anyone interested in pre-motor technology.
