About the Author

A former reporter for the Denver Business Journal and 14-year editor-in-chief of Paddler magazine, Eugene Buchanan has written about the outdoors for more than 25 years, from covering the X Games for ESPN.com to working for NBC at the Beijing Olympics. With freelance articles published in the New York Times, Men's Journal, Sports Afield, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Forbes Life and other publications, his passion for traveling and writing has taken him to more than 30 countries on six continents. A Fellow member of the Explorer's Club and contributor to Men's Journal's The Great Life anthology, he spearheaded the Outdoor Industry Association's Outdoor Idols campaign, honoring teens' accomplishments in the outdoors. Brothers on the Bashkaus was first released by Fulcrum Publishing in 2007. His second book, Outdoor Parents, Outdoor Kids, was released by Heliconia Press in 2010, winning the gold medal from the Living Now Book Awards. Great book. The dog loved the first copy to "pieces"

This book seems to be written for a select audience. If you enjoy reading about the adventures of others, different cultures, or are just a mellow person pursuing the good life, you will probably enjoy this book. It hooked me even though the writing isn't going to win any awards. I bought it for someone who has worked for NOLS and lived in Boulder. It was just so what he would do. Good to know there are others out there like him.

It has been a long dry spell for armchair travel books on Russia. Certainly many such works have been published over the past decade. The problem is that most have been eminently missable.This book breaks that drought.You do not have to have an interest in kayaking, rafting or Class V rivers to enjoy Buchanan's account of four Americans' and ten Latvians' trip down one of Siberia's wildest rivers. You simply have to love a good travel story: plans gone awry, hilarious characters met on the road, the clash of cultures, nail-biting adventure and the thrill of new experiences.When the Americans are told to leave behind their custom-crafted raft (instead, they will build rafts from scratch at their drop-in point, with pontoons made from repurposed germ warfare suits - reuse is the Latvian team's specialty)... when they compare their smoothly stylish life jackets with the grotesque but eminently more effective homemade ones of their Latvian hosts (including one made with soccer balls)... when the hapless Americans bristle under the authoritarian food rationing of the mighty Olga... you almost wish you were along for the ride. Almost. For this crew of 14 will descend from high in the Altai mountains through some of the world's most treacherous rapids, on rafts made from trees they cut themselves, living off the land for over a month, paddling with homemade oars and eating all too much salo (pig fat).This journey is assuredly more enjoyable from an armchair and surely one of the best travel stories out of Russia in many many years. "When the language barrier could mean life or death, trust is essential..."Eugene and three white water companions are hyped up and on their way to Siberia to run a river with international cohorts. When they arrive they are greeted by three unknown Russian rafters who just seem to take over their lives. Communication is difficult, and at best, a bit of broken English is spoken.The group the Americans intended to meet is unavoidably detained by weather conditions, and is unable to participate. The Russians invite the Americans to join them on their trip down the Bashkaus River. When they are shown movies of the river, it is more dangerous than they had planned to run. Several of the rapids are class V and some class VI (extremely dangerous). After several unsuccessful attempts to contact their planned partners, the Americans decide to join the trip down the Bashkaus--a choice they later question on more than one occasion.Getting off to a "rough start" doesn't even describe the challenges they endure just trying to reach the drop-off point. Struggling with the language, unfamiliar customs, carrying their gear, and undependable transportation, are just the beginning.Finally they set off down the river on homemade Russian rafts. All team members are assigned responsibilities. Confidence between the teams is a bit unstable. But as they face the power of the Bashkaus, uniting for the good of the team, a brotherhood of the river starts to grow.When the common goal to best the Bashkaus becomes frightening, even terrifying at times, quick thinking and sharp minds are essential. The Americans experience the art of survival in a very different way while cooking, food rationing, foraging, and improvising with what is available. Everyone's knowledge and skills are respected and needed, each a valuable part of the whole. Friendship develops into a deep trust and when danger threatens they all pull together. We all hear about teamwork and "we need to be a team" whether it is in our work, school, sports team or even our communities. Buchanan has done a masterful job of describing real team and teamwork in action. This should be required reading for any business team, high school hockey club or any group on which the welfare of the individual rest on the welfare of the group (and whether we like to admit it or not, that really is how most organizations really work).Completely lacking judgmental tones, he weaves in rich descriptions of the team concept utilized by the Latvian rafters of which Buchanan and his group of American paddlers become a part of. Their survival depended upon it. Big water rafting is inherently dangerous in its own right, but the sheer scale and ferocity of the Bashkaus, and its location ensured that there was no safety net for the American adventurers or their hosts. Although the cultural contrasts are sharp it is the human spirit for adventure, survival and accomplishment that comes forth and formed a solid team, even with a significant language barrier. If this group of real life adventurers had practiced individualism, fractured leadership, disparate objectives, and hubris over informed judgment, then I am sure no one would be around to have written this story.If you are in a team, or need to get groups working together, get everyone to read the book and have a discussion about what it is to be a team - I'll bet your stumbling blocks will seem mild in comparison to what the Bashkaus dishes out.

Ow, a very promising beginning turned dnf midway through for me. I enjoyed the writing style but lost interest in the characters and their story..The book starts off to paint a lovely and realistic portrait of a long term relationship in the final days before a breakup. Refreshing and unusual choice in a romance novel, and I love this book for that section of the story alone. Also in the first chapters there are well written flashbacks to childhood memories of bullying and being bullied.Back to the intended couple! As adults the bully and his victim meet again. The author seem to understand being bullied often leaves a victim with emotional scars and pent up anger and lets the main character, Owen, express such feelings in the first meetings between the protagonists. Next they fall in incontrollable lust with each other. Somewhere here the character's actions begin to make less and less sense to me.From the first intimate scene and onwards the victim is barraged by relatives, his ex, friends of the bully to FORGIVE his childhood abuser. "Give him a chance", "He's a changed man", "He had his heart broken and deserves to be loved", "If you're not interested you should tell him so, to string him along is not fair". All while Owen is unsure of what he feels for Brody, the bully. What is not FAIR is all the focus is on the bully's wellbeing! Seeing a victim pushed into the arms of his tormentor this way is what killed the romance in this story for me.

There is no way I can convey just how impressed I am by this debut novel. It felt real, authentic, and the emotions weren't contrived or shallow. Everything had a purpose, emotional motives were on point, and redemption and forgiveness felt amazing and painful all at once.I bled for Brody. Owen was right to be mad, to be bitter, angry, everything, and I love how the two men steadily worked past their history together, forgave each other and themselves, and moved into the future together. Real life moved along with them, the romance the focal point, but reality encroaching as it always does. Brody was so wounded and vulnerable, the facade ripped way, and Owen was the stronger of the two men, and he rose above his past as a target for bullies. Brody had one hit after another through his life once he escaped his father, and I loved the person he became.This book was hot, emotional, funny, charming, and intelligent. The ramifications and consequences of bullying weren't sanitized, but humanized, and showed the people beneath the bad choices. So well done. I rarely read contemporary, but I will be rereading this one. Loved it.

Hard To Let Go is an awesome debut novel by Jaclyn Quinn. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and Owen & Brody are a great couple. I loved how they were able to overcome their painful pasts and build a new relationship together. Their chemistry was amazing and the love scenes were hot, hot, hot! The writing and plot are top-notch. All the supporting characters are also stellar. I can’t wait to read more from Ms. Quinn!

I’m sorry, but I had to skim 80% of this. The premise was fine, but the emotions and characters lacking. Such a missed opportunity to bring the emotion to this story.

Brody bullied Owen for being gay when they were in high school together. The bullying was bad enough that years later when they meet again, Owen still hates him. Brody is back in Havens Cove to spend time with his dying mother.Incredibly sorry for his past behavior he tries to explain to Owen that he was wrong, that he was hiding the fact that he too is gay. Hoping that Owen will give him a chance.Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes. The chemistry between these guys jumps off the pages and made it one of the hottest books I've read. The cast of characters that fills this book truly makes it shine. Excited for the next book in the series.

Awesome start to the series. I fell in love with this town, and only wanted to know more about all the little amazing things going on. Here we meet Brody and Owen, theirs is a story I haven't read before where the former High School bully and the one picked on get together. This was brilliantly done, with deep emotions and a connection that grows naturally. Each hiding secrets from themselves, and discovering that being true to their hearts, being there for each other gets them that happy ending. Great side characters like Jonah, Gabe and Leslie. Can't wait for the next.

What an incredible story. High school bully, hiding his sexuality from fear of his abusive, homophobic, father, Brody comes back to town because his mother is dying. Owen, victim of Body's bullying , in a relationship with his best friend. Jonah hires Brody to finish the redo of their kitchen. Owen and Jonah realise they aren't in love anymore and split amicably, the chemistry between Brody and Owen is off the charts. One long and heartfelt conversation, confessions has Owen forgiving Brody and their story begins.

Owen and Brody were *not* friends in high school ..... and 15 years later they run into each other again in the small New England town they are from.Loved getting to know these guys, and their assorted friends and family!.....and, plenty of heat 😎

Kate Rheaume-Bleue is an excellent writer. I wrote a comment on her interview on Youtube that I will just paste here since I would be covering the same issues anyway. Some of the reviews here have already pointed out some of the limitations of the book and the fast moving nature of the knowledge surrounding K2 which make a static book sort of a futile effort. But it is a good start, especially if you have no background with K2.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------It is the best of the current crop of books popularizing K2. The only problem with her work is that she is Canadian so has limited experience with MK-4 in her practice (due to nanny-state potency restrictions there). It is absolutely not correct that MK-4 and MK-7 have the same effect and that dosage is the only difference. Pretty much all independent researchers acknowledge that if you could only take one, MK-4 is superior in most respects.The primary people who advocate MK-7 exclusively over MK-4 are the Dutch researchers on the payroll, directly or indirectly via sponsored research, of the big MK-7 producers and then the main benefit they point out is the longer half-life (not really a benefit if you know what serum half-life means). Even the Japanese prefer MK-4 for high-dose therapeutic uses. All you have to do is go to PubMed and start reading some of the abstracts or do a web search on mk4 vs mk7 to get a broader and more informed perspective.The MK-7 manufacturer sponsored research seems always careful to not directly compare with MK-4 (no non-inferiority trials). If they did we would discover that MK-7 is not found in the brain or the saliva, MK-4 is and it is neuroprotective. MK-7 does not cross the placenta and is not at significant amounts in breast milk. MK-4 is carried by HDL (which accounts for its more rapid clearing), whereas MK-7 is carried by VLDL (which causes it to linger in the blood instead of being picked up by the tissues). MK-4 is the body's preferred form from the time of the origin of the human species. Natto with MK-7 has only been a significant part of anyone's diet for maybe a millennium. If it needs to, the human body will transform available K1 into MK-4 (granted, not very effectively) not MK-7.You wouldn't guess it by the way it is marketed, but even the fermented derived form of MK-7 is about as far from natto as you can get. One of the leading manufacturers, NattoPharma, doesn't even use the same bacteria as is used in natto (bacillus subtilis natto) and they claim there is zero soy in their product. The medium is chickpea (garbanzo bean) flour and dextrin and you can look up on Wikipedia the bacillus licheniformis they use for a culture bacteria. I suppose it does not really matter the source as long as the end product provides the stated potency.Even more interesting is the fact that their newest product is actually synthetic MK-7 which is much cheaper to produce. Nothing wrong with that. It is a purer product than their naturally derived one. They even named it MenaQ7 PURE. Both of their products strip out the naturally occurring cis-isomer form of MK-7. Nothing wrong with that, either. The isolated trans-isomer form is what is wanted anyway.The point to take away is that people get a warm fuzzy when they see the word natural associated with MK-7. Commercial naturally derived MK-7 (specifically MenaQ7) is far removed from nature and has nothing to do with natto. The company even says their synthetic version is bio-equivalent and nature-identical to their fermented version (i.e., you can't tell the difference). Soon, if not already, most all MK-7 on the market will be synthetic because it is purer and cheaper to make. [...] (I suspect Amazon will zap this link so I will also put it in the comments.)Even the lovely Kate couldn't resist the financial lure of becoming a paid spokesperson for an MK-7 marketer (the vitamin company she works for). That only slightly detracts from her excellent book and she would have had to become a smuggler to become personally familiar with MK-4 in her practice anyway. But as always, when it comes to the validity of advice, always follow the money. There are good things to be said for MK-7 (I take it myself) but it is disingenuous to suggest it is somehow superior overall on its own to MK-4. The evidence does not support that view. They both have related and differing effects. It probably does make sense to take both.The real problem is that well-heeled marketing and patent collection oriented companies that manufacture MK-7 use research funds as a means of marketing their specific products via carefully structured and relentless research programs. The end user requires much diligence to wade through it all and discern actual value. And as always, follow the money...

I read this book in early 2015 and thought I'd try vitamin K2. I've been taking it for over two years now, 5mg of the Carlson brand of the MK-4 form of K2. In the first week of taking it, it helped clean up the tartar on my teeth. I've had that effect continuously for over two years. By the way, I tried taking an appropriate amount of the MK-7 form of K2 and it gave me hives over all of my body. I quickly switched to MK-4 and have had no problems. I know the book mentions taking 45 mg of K2, but I only seem to need 5mg. I also had a dexa scan and I have a fantastic scores on my bone density, although I don't have any earlier scores to compare that to.I thought this book was fascinating at the time I read it and I still find that to be true. I take vitamins D3, K2, and vitamin A. Hopefully this will keep my bones strong my whole life. Since it works on my teeth, I'm hoping it is also working on my bones and arteries.

01/05/2018 Taking Vitamins K2, A and D3 has changed my life. The body works on a triage system: Survival is first, reproduction is second. If you only take one of the three vitamins, you automatically become deficient in the other two. Vitamin K2 is needed to direct Calcium to your bones and teeth, otherwise it also becomes plaque build-up in one's arteries. The body is constantly building up new bones and teeth and tearing down the old. Vitamin A directs the old calcium to the kidneys, and it is excreted via your urine. In the US Vitamin D3 is added to milk, orange juice, and most calcium (plus magnesium and zinc) supplements. As a result of all these vitamin D3 supplements, the body becomes deficient in K2 and A. If you take the same amount of Vitamin A and D3, you won't become toxic in either one. Apparently in the US nobody realizes that you need to take the same amount of both vitamins. If I had been taking these vitamins I would not have had two blood clots in 2014. I started losing hair on my scalp (I have a better understanding of how upsetting this can be). The doctor's told me that I had too many more serious problems. They did not realize that the hair loss was a symptom. (To be fair to the doctors, they only have one semester of nutrition, which includes information on vitamins.) I have stopped losing hair!!! These vitamins can reverse type 2 diabetics (see page 126 for the recommended dosage of Vitamin K2), prevent Alzheimer's, help prevent cancer, slow down the aging process--I can't possibly list all of the benefits. Look at pages 31-32 and 144 to see the difference in children's teeth. These vitamins, if taken throughout the pregnancy help form the fetus's face (they will be able to breath through their nose), and the child will not need braces. Braces cost at least $5,000 or more. The mother's labor will also be easier. The first two months of taking these vitamins my left leg went down 4 inches in circumference--and that was below the knee! (26 inches down to 22 inches). Instead of just being able to lift my left food 2 or 3 inches from the floor I can now lift it at least 12 inches. (That is sitting down.) My body is doing so much better; the only difference was taking the vitamins. These are so many medical problems that can be prevented or reversed. Do your body a favor, and start taking these vitamins.
