Other books go deeper into the chemistry, processes, and different smoking/curing approaches. But they are aimed at serious hobbyists or people considering smoked/cured meats as a business venture. For the guy or gal that wants to step up the flavor of food they make, not food they buy, this is a great little intro to the equipment and procedures used by most home smokers.I have both the hard copy and the kindle versions. Either works quite nicely and with Amazon's cloud reader, the less expensive Kindle version can work quite well if you don't mind reading it on your computer. I'll be using some of the recipes mentioned in the book.It is not the one and only book you will want on the subject, but it is a fine starter.

very knowledgeable, but was looking for a guide with options for NO nitrates/nitrites - that's not this one

This is a great book, it covers all of the important aspects of curing and smoking that you need to know for home use without a lot of boring technical details that would only be important for commercial use, It's written in plain simple to understand English and is very easy to follow, it also has a lot of recipe's and pictures.

A handy book to have for people living in the country or for fisher people to smoke or cure their catch, please remember that the meat still needs to be cooked after you have salted or smoked it. And the small is a nice way to tease the neighbours. A great book and I highly recommend you get it while it's still in print.

This is one of those books that are good to have around, but it's not like it's exclusive/mystery information.The information in this book is searchable online, but it does have good tips and tricks, which is why I a giving it 4 stars.

This book is good for people who are just getting their feet wet in grilling and smoking. For me there was too much detail about grills and different smokers because most people that are moving up to the curing stage are already experienced smokers. Very informative though. Would definitely recommend.

As a MINI owner, I wanted to know a bit more on the history of the car. It's always amazing to find something so popular that is almost non-existent in the US. It was also another example of how Britain's long depression post WWII led to innovation. Sir Alec really hit a sweet spot with his design and those that have taken it forward have continued to create fun little cars. There is a lot of information in the book on the original, pre-BMW Mini and only a tiny bit on the new generation. That was a bit of a let down especially since we rarely see them in the US. It also would have been nice to have some pictures to reference as the book went on. Having to stop reading and check Bing was a bit of a pain and I wasn't always sure I was seeing the correct car.

Don't know about the print book but the kindle version lacked photos which would have supported great narrative . Easy to follow writing

A great book on the history of Minis. Not an abundance of photos but there are plenty. It only covers the new MINIs very lightly.

Many insightful stories, many photos, and a great review of the 50 years, including the modern-day concepts, and vehicles such as the Clubman.Note; the "jeremy clarkson" contribution is really just one page and a half.

95 % old school Mini. Not what I expected.

I purchased this book for my husband. He is loving it. He is continually reading out passages to me saying " did you know that ...... " I keep telling him I don't care but he keeps telling me all about it anyway! That proves to me that he is really enjoying the book and the information in it - and of course he LOVES Minis and has one... Personally I feel a few pictures would be good.

So much information, perfect book & quick delivery.

Just started reading this one for work on my Corvair restoration project. Good this far and worth the read

Really doesn’t give much information or “how to”. The book is an autobiography of Richard Finch.

As advertised and very interesting read

Paid with Amexco points. What a ripoff that was. Found out you can buy this book from Clark's Corvair Parts for $17Great book. Worth $17 but not with Amexco points of the equivalent of $99

I had been searching all over for this book. I found it on Amazon. Condition was as advertised, price was great. It arrived on time.

Definitely add to the Corvair Book Collection

This is an older publication. Plenty of ideas, some I don't agree with. I have owned and repaired Corvair's for 50 years. At one time this and other publications were all that was available for Corvair owners. For the new person getting into the hobby this book is fine to have. But I recommend other publications like the CORSA Tech Guide for far more detailed and informative information maintaining your Corvair.

PRICE is way off base. These are $15-20 at several Corvair shops/ mail order houses. Don't pay the prices these people are asking, just contact Clark's.Great book, thats what the 5 star marking is for.

I just finished "There There", by Tommy Orange and I’m so glad to have read it - though sometimes it was difficult:This book will make you sad - read it anyway.This book will make you mad - read it anyway.This book will remind you of the lies we were taught as children - read it to remember.This book will remind you not to tell those lies anymore - read it to know the truth.This book will make you smile – know hope.This book will ruin Thanksgiving for you - read it so you can re-think your future Thanksgivings."There There", (the title referring to an out-of-context quote by Gertrude Stein about Oakland, CA) is fascinating, heartbreaking, frustrating and ultimately hopeful. The novel is comprised of individual, but interconnected/interrelated stories by a dozen characters; their stories and actions will culminate at the “Big Oakland Powwow”. (There are some major coincidences – but just suspend your disbelief and let it go!) The section on Dene Oxendene, somewhat mirrors the premise: Dene wants to make a documentary film of various Native Americans talking about their life experiences of living in Oakland, and that is pretty much the description of this novel – plus some mysteries and some shocking action.Summing it up best, Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield’s Mother tells her that the world is made up of stories and that they honor their people by telling their stories. And that’s how Tommy Orange honors his people, and his readers, with these transforming and redemptive stories.

This Canterbury Tales-style novel, in which a series of characters (all Native people) are introduced, and ultimately brought together at a modern Powwow, was strangely unsatisfying. Attempts to keep the characters straight made me feel as if I were suffering from attention deficit disorder; just as I gained any sense of a newly-introduced player (and any investment in his survival) the narrative switched to someone new. (Loother, we hardly knew ye.) Everyone ends up at the Powwow. There is a lot of random gunfire. Many of our new-found friends end up shot, some fatally, but we don't get to know who survives. ???However, if one steps outside the plot and listens to the voices of these wounded people, all trying to find some place to stand and build their lives, time spent with this book is not wasted.

When I first saw the title of this book, I read it as soothing words of comfort, but I had it totally wrong. Taking the famous Gertrude Stein quote "There is no there there," Tommy Orange explains that this seeming indictment of Oakland, California as a featureless hole in the landscape is not what Stein meant. Further reading of the quote proves she found her hometown unrecognizable as the place of her memory. The entirety of the United States could be classified as such, given the effects of progress perpetuated on native Americans by colonizers. Late in the book, the broken promises, actual crimes and genocide are related metaphorically through a story written by one of the characters.And what characters populate these pages. There are approximately 12 main ones, each embodying a fact of urban Native American identity. These complex relationships form a patchwork that make the outcome inevitable. There is search for family, identity and place, many feeling marginalized and invisible in the urban setting they find themselves. Earlier chapters provide character studies that present the players, their histories and motivations, so clearly the prose flows and pages fly by, followed by an almost cinematic speedup as the climax approaches.Full disclosure - I began this book several days ago employing the audible edition, but found it was too rich and full to continue that way and had to begin all over again with a print version.

What does it mean to be a Native American—often invisible in the U.S. tapestry? Documentary filmmaker Dene Oxendene, one of a dozen characters whom we meet in this book, gives his take (based on Gertrude Stein's famous quote about Oakland, "There is no there there.") He says:: “This there there. He hadn’t read Gertrude Stein beyond the quote. But for Native people in this country, all over the Americas, it’s been developed over, buried ancestral land, glass and concrete and wire and steel, unreturnable covered memory. There is no there there.”Reminiscent in ways of the movie Crash, these characters—who eventually come together in the Big Oakland Powwow—crash into each other intermittently, leaving behind sadness and often scars.There’s Jacquie Red Feather, one of the characters we get to know the most, an alcoholic who is facing the tatters of her past and on her way to her future—finally meeting her three grandsons. Her daughter Blue, whom she never met (and who has given up those boys) is fleeing an abusive marriage. The oldest of the sons, Orvil, is pulling spider legs out of his own leg wound and wrestling about what it means to be Indian. And then there are the others —Danny who creates plastic guns on a 3D printer, Edwin who loses himself in overeating, Thomas who is half-white and floundering in his life.Tommy Orange’s purpose is clear; he wants us to know that the term “Native” cannot be easily defined and, in fact, encompasses many kinds of people who share the burden of alienation, isolation and cruel history. They come to the annual Big Oakland Powow for different reasons: “The messy, dangling strands of our lives got pulled into a braid—tied to the back of everything we’ve been doing all along to get us here…we’ve been coming for years, generations, lifetimes, layered in prayer and hand-woven regalia, beaded and sewn together, feathered, braided, blessed, and cursed.”This is a major contribution to Urban Indian literature; I’ve never read anything quite like it. But it also defines all of us, as Americans, in many important ways. Tommy Orange has power to spare.

It is critical of the future king but also reveals why he was determined to resume his relationship with Mrs. Parker-Bowles. It is perhaps too harsh to blame either Charles or Diana for displaying normal human emotions, when each yearned for a happy resolution of their problems. This was indeed difficult when the news media chose to ruthlessly exploit every aspect of their private lives. It is no small wonder that the Prince of Wales felt trapped and longed for personal freedom, while Diana became an insufferable romantic, finding physical love, but no emotional escape, with all the wrong men. They were an imperfect mismatch doomed from the start because the press put her on a pedestal and did their best to downgrade the man who made it possible. Christopher Warwick was the first biographer to hint that this union could never have worked even without media coverage due to the age disparity, their clashing personalities, and alternate lifestyles. Morton, Anthony Holden, James Whitaker, Nicholas Davies, and Nigel Dempster all took the Princess's side exclusively in their biographies, while Penny Junor and Lady Colin Campbell stood up for the Prince in their books, the latter in two best-sellers Diana In Private and The Royal Marriages. Diana In Private (1992) was highly controversial because it alleged that Lady Diana Spencer was not a virgin when Charles began the 1980 courtship and that she had manipulated the media even before their engagement. Ingrid Seward was another woman author who took Charles's side against Diana's after the crash because she knew the full story and had actually been on close terms with the Princess. Her husband Ross Benson had been a former schoolmate of Prince Charles and was equally sympathetic. It is doubtful that Warwick knew either the Prince or Princess as well as Seward or Benson. He did, however, interview many of the friends and relatives of Andrew and Camilla Parker-Bowkes as well as others close to the royal couple.In the 1993 hardback version which was titled A Greater Love, author Warwick was slightly critical of Diana. The media backlash against Junor was sensational. The public lapped it up and made her life a misery. It was pretty rough-going for Charles and his lady-love as well because many people believed that the Prince had cooperated with Junor, who had become a friend some time after his first marriage and who had gone to boarding school with Princess Anne. Warwick chose to soften his stance on the dead princess, very different from his 1993 interpretation of the troubled icon, hence The Windsor Knot.Warwick did excellent research with the possible exception of a major goof on page four of the paperback edition of The Windsor Knot in which he wrote that Diana was directly descended from Nell Gwynn via a liaison with Charles II. Diana is descended from Louise Kouralle (Duchess of Portsmouth), the strumpet Lucy Walters, and like Camilla (now Duchess of Cornwall) from Barbara Villiers (the Duchess of Cleveland), but not Nellie Gwynn, the most popular and beloved of the Merry Monarch's many mistresses because she was pretty, witty, and lowborn.

I thought that I knew all that there was to know about the whole Charles-Camilla-Diana triangle, then I started reading the Windsor Knot and I realized that I did not know all that much.The book is more than the story about Charles and Camilla and Diana's relationships with eachother. The author delves into the murky past of the players families and tells us about the some of the people that came before Camilla, Charles, and Diana.A very interesting, entertaining book!

The author doesn't even try to hide his bias against Prince Charles and Camilla. He's dug up every shred of gossip he could find that paints his subjects in a bad light, if he can't find it, he makes it up.

Is there anything about the Di-and-Chuck saga that hasn't already been said? Christopher Wilson has decided that a book highlighting events from Camilla's perspective would fill a gap in the coverage of these events. It's a reasonable idea for a book, except that there's nothing to indicate he has talked directly to Camilla, and he's reduced to guessing what goes on in her mind.Nonetheless, the book is an easy read and approaches the well-known story from a different angle, adding a few tidbits such as describing the Queen's raging hatred of Camilla. According to Wilson, it was Camilla who encourged Charles to marry Diana. The book is rather ambivalent in its perspective on Camilla, suggesting she saw no ethical dilemma in cheating on her husband to be Charles' mistress and orchestrating the sham marriage between Charles and Di. Yet in other passages, Camilla is shown in a sympathetic light. Even if Camilla is responsible for her own fate, it can't be easy being the most hated woman in Britain.The book portrays Di's marriage as more of an empty shell than other authors have portrayed it. The author suggests Di knew what she was getting into, but was too naive and too intimidated to back out during the engagement. The marriage never had a chance; Di was never intended to be more than a showpiece. As the story is told in this book, the villain is Charles, who over and over is portrayed as self-centered even by the standards of royalty and utterly devoid of a moral compass or basic interpersonal skills.The early chapters cover Camilla's family history. Skip those and jump into the middle of the book which is far more interesting. The book, written in 2002, ends with the author speculating that everyone should brace themselves for a Charles-and-Camilla marriage announcement, which of course occurred in 2005.
