I want to collect all the children's books in the wonderfully inspirational series, "What Really Matter." My grandnephew, Tony, and his older sister, Dani, love it when I read "Lopez Lomong" to them. (They also enjoyed "Pablo Pineda.") Some of the words are difficult for them to understand but they comprehend the principles and concepts and enjoy the bright, colorful illustrations. I always explain the plot as I read along. The books in the "What Really Matters" series promote Diversity. They teach children that all of us, no matter what we look like or where we are from, have special gifts and talents that help us to contribute to society and make it a better world. With hard work, and a little luck, we can overcome unsurmountable odds and reach our goals. "Disabilities" can be turned into "special abilities."In Toastmasters, I once wrote and presented a speech titled "Don't Be Labeled as Disabled." After I severely injured my spine, and could barely walk, I refused to obtain a handicapped placard for fear that it would hinder my healing. I never wanted to become complacent with my present state; I wanted to strive for a better one. Furthermore, you don't have to accept the labels that people force upon you. I often think of Hester Prynne of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter." The "A" she wore originally stood for "Adultery." Years later, the villagers gave it a new meaning: "Able." I love these inspirational stories in the "What Really Matters" series. What really matters is the love we have for ourselves and each other. Without that, the world won't survive much longer.

The story might be too scary for younger kids. The age range is listed as 7+, and I think it is just too much for 7 year olds. I read it to mine, and he said the story is probable true, except for the giant. I did not argue with him. The giant mentioned was one of the soldiers who kidnapped the main character from his mother along with other kids. From adult point of view, it is not written well, and the specific language used is not proper for a children's book, in my opinion. And the story the book tells was kind of grating. As I said, the boy was kidnapped, and then after many years adopted by an American family. To be chosen to be adopted, he had to write an essay in English. Does it mean adoptive families only would accept good English speaking kids from the refugee camp? How generous. Then when the boy grows up, he finds his mother in Kenya, and in the story she is called "biological" mother, as if she gave him up and was not worth being called his real mother because of that. Overall, the story is choppy and confusing. Maybe it is a bad translation, I don't know.

This book by Ana Eulate is beautiful. I found the story to be amazing and inspirational. In fact, I can't wait for my teens to get home so I can share it with them. Yes, teenagers. I think it's entirely suitable for teens in the US because it presents the story of a world they know little about. One of great darkness and one where there are amazing sparks of light.Lopez Lomong is a US Champion runner and now an American citizen. But he didn't attain his university degree nor his citizenship the easy way. He was torn away from his mother's lap during a church mass in Sudan. He almost died in the captivity of militants, but escaped with the help of older boys who promised to watch over him.*I don't mention this to spoil the story but to give adults who are reading this book to younger children an idea of what happens. There are moments to cheer about, and moments that are sad, but I know that this is not a book I would have read to my young son because he would have found the separation of parents and children too sad. The subject is handled beautifully but might not be perfect for every child. It would have been fine, for example for my daughter.I think most everyone --young or old-- will find Lomong's story to be inspirational. It's just a good old-fashioned rags-to-riches, or desert poverty to Nike-signing, story. And children will get to see the good that adults and even children like them can do. Not as mighty nations but as individuals. How people can open their hearts to save and care for others.

This is an amazing story that children and adults need to read. It is a children's book but it is a real story of a boy snatched out of the arms of his mother at a Catholic mass. That ended his childhood. He was locked up in a shack by soldiers. Cold and hungry, three older boys told him that they were ready to escape and if he went with them, he would have to run and run. The four made it to Kenya to a refugee camp. He never saw those boys again but had a new family of eleven boys. He ran eighteen miles around the large camp every day. He was inspired by the 2000 Olympic games that he watched on an old black and white TV set with other boys. He decided what what he wanted to do.That was the beginning of his next journey that would eventually lead him to be a champion runner at many Olympics and form friendships and be family to others. The vivid colors in the illustrations stand out and the story is very inspiring for children as well as adults.

I didn't really feel that this story was appropriate for children as young as 7. There are soldiers kidnapping children.Children living by themselves in refugee camps and children being adopted because they can write a good essayin English. The story itself has a rough unfinished feel and the illustrations are not the best. There is some mention of religion and hints of a higher power throughout the book. The fact that Lomong's biological mother was not found until after he was adopted was disturbing to me, it seemslike more of an effort to find her could have been made during the 10 years he was in the refugee camp.Overall, I just did not care very much for the book, the unfinished, hurried feel of it, the disturbing facts, and it notreally being appropriate for children as young as 7.

I am re-reading Under the Tuscan Sun that I got after a trip to Italy in 1999 and it's once again a wonderful book. I had forgotten there were recipes in it and was delighted to discover this cookbook. I just received it. It's GORGEOUS! I am making the Red Pepper Tart on page 59 for dinner tonight. There are beautiful photographs on almost every page. It's a beautiful book and if you enjoy cooking you will absolutely love it. If you don't enjoy cooking, I hope it will inspire you to give it a try. The recipes are simple and easy and the book is a delight to the eye and the appetite. The copy I got was autographed by both Frances and Ed, so a very nice bonus! I love it!

Great and mostly easy recipes with a little flair. Will be using several of these recipes for the annual Summer Soiree I throw for the local foodbank donors and think they will love them. A few can be made in advance so that will work well. Ingredients are also readily available without needing a specialty grocery so added bonus. You also get nice photos and gives you hope that your backyard will someday have the same character!!!!

I bought this after returning from a week in Tuscany. Great recipes and information around how to pick the best ingredients to use. I'm loving re-creating our Italian experience at home!

Every year I hold an Italian dinner at my house for 14 friends. I plan from appetizers to dessert and assign my friends various dishes. This year I purchased Under the Tuscan Sun Cookbook and had the best time planning our menu.. From Pear Angolotti with Gorgonzola & Walnuts, Baked Peppers with Ricotta and Basil, Citrus & Fennel Salad to Il Falconieres's Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Sauce...what a treat. Add a bottle of Ardito from the Baracchi winery and I'm back in Tuscany. The recipes are easy to follow, the pictures are beautiful and most important the dishes are superb! Can't wait to try more out of the book!

I love a cookbook with photographs - this one is over the top. The beautiful photography paired with Frances Mayes' vivid writing makes this one a journey - beware, you should have some red wine, crusty Italian bread, good olive oil and perhaps a chunk of parmesan while you sit down with this one. Most of the recipes are easy to follow and make - ravioli and homemade pasta dishes take a little more finesse but are fun and by the last glass of wine you won't care!

There are some very good recipies in this book. Admintally some are not dissimmilar to those my mom and grandmother used to make but there are a few new ones. All of the dishes my wife has prepared came out great.Worth a look.

I love this book, or is it, I love Italy and Italian food. The Ragu recipe is wonderful! All the recipes remind me of my 3 visits to Italy. What delightful memories of the friendly people and the delicious food!

This is a wonderful book just to read and to learn how the Italians cook. It is full of memories, conversations, people, and recipes. I have learned a lot from Frances Maye's books and this one just put it all together. I would buy it again and give it as a gift.

#1,886 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I, like many others, picked up a copy of this book based on the recommendation of Hugh Howey, the author of the Wool saga. As a side note, the Wool series is the tightest, freshest entry into the science fiction genre in many years. I sincerely believe we will look back and discuss the impact of Wool like the impact of Dune. So, when an author of this stature recommends a book to me, I am willing to give it a shot.I feel like Mr. Mather is trying to be a jack of all trades, and in the process has spread his narrative rather thin. The premise of Atopia is that around 2050-2075 or so, the population of earth is 10 billion, and multiple wars for resources have devastated the planet, and wealthy groups of private citizens have built floating enclaves in the middle of the ocean. As another reviewer pointed out, it's a bit like Bioshock. Within a few chapters, the author has started spinning his elaborate story of distributed consciousness and "metaverses" created by nanobots inside of people which allow them to somehow make use of the concept of neuroplasticity and "fragmentation of consciousness" to essentially create alternate realities.I try to read at least 30 science fiction books a year, and I can say that this book takes a fresh and unique premise, but kind of never gets off the ground. The story is some mixture of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, Neuromancer by William Gibson, and Catch 22 by Joseph Heller. Firstly, as a physician, the medical jargon and discussions are a bunch of nonsense. The premise is so convoluted that I think I would have greatly benefited from at least 2-3 introductory chapters of exposition. Instead, each chapter is told from a different perspective, with about 8 rotating narratives. The characters have no identity to follow because they are all spread across the multiverse with distributed consciousness. This book is honestly just about impossible to follow. The last book I read was Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie, which has a similar idea of distributed consciousness, but it is much easier to follow because she actually takes time to explain what is going on and allows you to follow one narrator for more than 5-10 minutes at a time. The characters are so loosely distributed into the digital world (and many of them are just abandoned after 1-2 chapters) that they hardly resonate as discrete entities. The technology is very interesting, but the story relies so heavily on the technology as to be a detriment to the plot as a whole. Relatively speaking, this is the hardest plot to follow of any book I've ever read, mainly because each chapter is told from the perspective of a new character. I was constantly trying to look back and re-read things, but eventually I got tired of doing that and just tried to make it through to the end.Anyway, this book may be worth a shot, and I'm happy I saw the unique premise through to the end, but I will certainly not be continuing this series.

Update: well I made it through the book . I admire the imagination and ambition to attempt a different type of storytelling of a fascinating (and fantastic) subject. But. The first two thirds of the book circle round and round and round and round a sprawling often repetitive amount of technical exposition and character background far too loosely-there is only a whisper of momentum propelling the story forward especially after such a promising first chapter—I still want more info and story about Olympia which to me means that starting off in such depth about Olympia was simply too much. The entire first 2/3 needs to be tightened up, which I acknowledge is difficult given the complicated story. But once you backwards engineer from the last 25% of the book you really understand which parts of the (dreadfully boring) previous 75% are foundational and necessary to the story and what’s completely extraneous. But. The idea is interesting, the story, after slogging through it all, is actually really compelling-once you finally get to what the gist of it is. I’ll be reading the rest of the series and hoping for better editing. The quality of editing for this first book in the series was criminally poor. But much credit to the author that despite that, I’m giving the rest of the series a go.____________The idea for the book itself is fantastic and well imagined. But the both the method of story telling and the content of those stories is so lacking in coherence and forward momentum. I’m at 60% and it. has. been. a. slog. The switching back and forth in first person around a whole cast of characters is tiresome and there aren’t enough overlapping points of interaction to really bring it all together. Also So. Much. Of the book is just exposition it’s actually boring. It’s as if no one edited the book. It reads like a first draft. It’s messy, tedious, and lacking focus. Hopefully the remaining 40% will redeem it if I even make it to the end - at this point I’m not sure I will. Absolutely do not recommend.

I have not read many science fiction books, and never one like this. There is no easy way to describe the plot. I quickly realized I had throw expectations out the window. This is a fresh read and not predictable.I won't try to hash out the plot for you. I will say that this is a complex story and you need to be in for the long hall. The story bounces from one perspective to another. The perspectives have a common thread that quickly becomes evident. The pace picks up in the second half of the book as separate threads start to come together. One interesting thing: after I read, I would find myself thinking about the book and what I would do if in that world. I had to admit to myself that I would be right in the thick of the problem. Just as enmeshed as some of the characters. I have read many books that stayed with me, but it is usually the characters. In this book it is the plot that keeps popping up in my thoughts all day. This book was a welcome deviation from what I normally read. I will be reading the sequel.

From the Back Cover

The New York Times bestselling author of State of Wonder, Run, and Bel Canto creates a resonant portrait of a life in this collection of writings on love, friendship, work, and art."The tricky thing about being a writer, or about being any kind of artist, is that in addition to making art you also have to make a living." So begins This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage, an examination of the things Ann Patchett is fully committed to—the art and craft of writing, the depths of friendship, an elderly dog, and one spectacular nun. Writing nonfiction, which started off as a means of keeping her insufficiently lucrative fiction afloat, evolved over time to be its own kind of art, the art of telling the truth as opposed to the art of making things up. Bringing her narrative gifts to bear on her own life, Patchett uses insight and compassion to turn very personal experiences into stories that will resonate with every reader. These essays twine to create both a portrait of life and a philosophy of life. Obstacles that at first appear insurmountable—scaling a six-foot wall in order to join the Los Angeles Police Department, opening an independent bookstore, and sitting down to write a novel—are eventually mastered with quiet tenacity and sheer force of will. The actual happy marriage, which was the one thing she felt she wasn't capable of, ultimately proves to be a metaphor as well as a fact: Patchett has devoted her life to the people and ideals she loves the most. An irresistible blend of literature and memoir, This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage is a unique examination of the heart, mind, and soul of one of our most revered and gifted writers.

I love Ann Patchett. As I was processing my divorce, her essay about her divorce experience was a great help to me. It validated my decision and helped strengthen my resolve against the former friends who took pity on me for leaving my deadbeat, loser, POS ex-husband, against the ex-BFF who blamed me for hurting a man who sat home and smoked weed and watched porn all day while I worked my ass off to support him. She's right, the marriage died but I have to live and it's OK to live and enjoy my life. Bravo!

I heard an interview with the author on NPR (I think) and immediately felt a connection. Why had I not read any of her books? Not sure. After this, if her fiction is anything as good as her essays then I will. Evidently she wrote advice shorts for Seventeen magazine to pay rent whilst dreaming of writing novels. While she writes of her life experience from the perspective of a writer, her message has universal appeal. Her 2011 essay for Byline, "Getaway Car" is a "how to" directed at an audience of budding writers, but speaks to all of us about failure, perseverance, and knowing one's self. I am not a writer or do I ever intend to be, but "Getaway Car" paralleled many of my own life experiences training as a scientist. Other essays are more personal and address personal freedom and happiness. In the interview she talked about her aversion to marriage having had one bad experience in her youth. She married because the relationship temporally had forced itself in that direction. I know people for whom this had happened. They date. They live together. The relationship is OK or maybe not. After a certain amount of time they marry because it is time, not because they are with the right person. Sometimes they only realize right before the wedding that the marriage will not work but because the invitations have been sent, it is too embarrassing to call it off. Some divorce early. Some go on for years. I think this is a must read for anyone thinking of planning a wedding. She also said in the interview but I haven't gotten to that part of the book that once she let go of marriage as an option she could fully enjoy relationships that were not perfect because she knew that they did not have to go on forever. She was in control always with an eye on the "emergency exit". Highly recommend. Not finished with the book yet but I am sure it is one that I will be sad to finish.

I really loved this book of short stories. I did not think that I would ever want to read a bunch of short stories, but I read it for a book group. The short stories made me laugh out loud or sad, so they were really engaging. It was nice to have a book of short stories, because it is easy to put the book down and then pick it back up again and not have to worry about the characters.

This is a review of the Audible Version: Beautifully read by the author. I listened to it twice through. Not every author is able to read her own work, but Ms. Patchett does a wonderful job, it's hard to imagine anyone else reading it. In fact, I got the audible version of her State of Wonder, and was disappointed when it was read by someone else. I liked all the essays in this collection, My Road to Hell Was Paved, and Tennessee were probably my favorites. If you're looking for something to listen to while driving, or exercising, this might be a good choice!

Ann Patchett is one of the top authors I have come across in my life. I read her for enjoyment and I read her to learn how to write. In this Story of a Happy Marriage I felt that she was talking to me. That's how intimate her writing style was. Sometimes I laughed out loud and people in the doctor's waiting room turned to stare and then smile. Now normally I read only fiction. I often buy non-fiction but I never get to read it. Somehow a wayward fiction story would get in the way. I made an exception to read Truth and Beauty after Bel Canto gave me such pleasure. So deciding to read This is the Story of a Happy Marriage wasn't a difficult decision. It is as enjoyable as any fictional story and one gets that much closer to Ann Patchett, a person to be admired. I wish I was her personal friend. I wish I went with her on that long drive to Eudora Welty's funeral and could talk to Eudora's relatives the way Ann described in this book. But having read the book at least I was vicariously there.

I have been reading Ann Patchett's books for many years. I don't know exactly, but 10 for sure and maybe 15. I always want to know about an author whose book especially moved me but I could never find out much about her. So this collection of short pieces of non - fiction is like going camping with someone you always wanted to get to know. It was a pleasure finally getting to meet her.I definitely recommend this and all of her fiction. (The only book I haven't read is "Taft").

Patchett as a novelist doesn’t make it easy to get comfortable with her. Each new novel is a different country, with its own language and culture. You can’t just glide from one to another; you need to spend time learning about this next stamp on your passport and what you learned previously doesn’t help you now. That’s not true of this book of essays. Her life ties them all together and the pieces are biographical without being a biography. It’s one country, but with a great deal of diversity, both geographical and temporal. It was good to get to know the girl who would write The Patron Saint of Liars (still my favorite) and her parents. Her reference to her father’s work as a police detective involved in the Manson case got me searching for his name in Helter Skelter. After finding him there, I was quickly reminded that Bugliosi only had room for one hero in his book, and that spot was reserved for himself. Her story about the events leading up to her marriage (the marriage of the title) gives new meaning to the phrase, “The heart wants what it wants”. She is best when recounting her personal relationships, especially with her grandmother and with Sister Nena, the person who literally taught her to write. It was nice to be reminded of what I liked about Catholicism.
