This is a great collection for the price. In addition to the pieces listed in the description, it includes the Mendelssohn Preludes and Fugues and the Brahms Prelude/Fugue on O Traurigkeit and the Fugue in a-flat minor. Many of the Brahms preludes in this edition have long passages in alto clef. I find the Mendelssohn pieces very difficult to read - the notes are crammed very close together. A movement of one of the Mendelssohn sonatas, for example, is only one page in this book, but is nearly three pages in another edition I own. The benefit of this, of course, is that there are fewer page turns, but Mendelssohn's writing can be so dense to begin with - I really find it hard to manage with this book. (I haven't had this problem with the Brahms or Schumann pieces, though.) A fine book if you're on a limited budget and can read alto clef or are willing to learn. It's worth the money just for the Brahms and Schumann. I've owned it for nearly 10 years and it has held up well.

The reviewers who criticize this book for being unscholarly or uncritical are missing the point of Dover editions. They are affordable reprints of old editions for the benefit of music-lovers and church musicians. If you are a musicologist, go and buy the $100 (or more) critical edition. If you want good music to practice with or play at church (where people do not care if it was Pachelbel or somebody else who wrote a beautiful prelude), buy this volume and get to work.

This is Dover's reproduction of the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel editions of these pieces. The above reviewer is right--the Brahms pieces are set much larger than the Mendelssohn. But there are some nice advantages to this edition.-In the Brahms chorale preludes, the chorale text is written directly over the cantus firmus.-There is a critical commentary, which also includes translations of the chorale texts.-Mendelssohn's instructions for registration are reprinted before the Six Sonatas. These instructions are extremely useful for German romantic music in general.The Schumann pieces included in this volume were originally written, not for organ, but for pedal piano-forte--an instrument that Schumann loved, but which failed to gain popularity.Note also: Although this volume contains all of Brahms's organ works, it does not contain all the organ works of Mendelssohn and Schumann. In particular, it does not contain Schumann's beautiful canonic etudes (highly recommended).

The quality of the book is very good, the music is very dark and clear. Now for the bad news, it is in horribly small print, which diminishes the need to do page turning often, but it is so SMALL! And due to the small size, at times it is difficult to distinguish certain difficult parts of the music. It is a nice book...but there are alot of flaws.

This means Chuck Dixon is still at the wheel – Gail Simone’s time doesn’t start for quite a while – and, unfortunately, it also means it’ll be a while before the Huntress joins the team proper. At this point, the Birds of Prey are comprised solely of Barbara Gordon (Oracle) and Dinah Lance (Black Canary).The book collects the first 11 issues of the ongoing, as well as Ravens # 1.Full spoiler talk below:Issues #1 through #3 tell the story of Black Canary infiltrating a fictitious third world country to bust up a human trafficking scheme (the man in charge kidnaps rich people and then extorts their families and employees to assure the hostage’s safety). I can’t say I was initially very fond of the group, and it isn’t clear as to why this issue is included in the trade paperback until right at the end, when Oracle and Black Canary make a brief cameo to set up plot, which leads us into the next storyline.Issues #4 through #6 revolve around the Ravens and Black Canary getting sucked back through time to the prehistoric age by a crashed Russian satellite that’s leaking Neutrino energy.You can’t make this stuff up.It’s a cray-cray turn of events for the Birds of Prey comic to take this early in its run, and is something I was unaware of going in, so it was a bit of a surprise.The B-plot of the arc revolves around the American government coming after Barbara, who has gotten herself noticed while going on her carefree hacking sessions of the Air Force information database. This particular story has acted as a through-line since the first issue, and it culminates in a bit of a fake out by the end of this arc.Another small through-line since issue 1 revolved around someone spying on Barbara via a bank of mounted wall monitors. This plot too comes to a close during the Ravens arc, but does so in a fashion that makes it feel like it was suddenly dropped. It’s an amusing moment involving Batman and Alfred, but the lead-up made it feel like it’d have a lot more weight than it ultimately does. I thought for sure it was tied to the storyline about Barbara's online hacker friend.The end of the arc leaves threads hanging. I don’t know that they’ll ever come back, but everyone seems to just take it as read that time travel is a thing that can happen and there’s an object out there that makes it possible. But it is a comic book, so okay.Issue #7 is a one-off story in which Black Canary is sent to extract a war criminal from hostile territory so that he can face due process in a court of his peers before his enemies can execute him. This is an interesting issue in that it addresses the moral question of what it means to be an usurper, and how the media portrays war criminals vs the reality of why they’ve done what they have. I would have liked to see at least one more issue dedicated to this storyline, but it was still an interesting read. I particularly like how the narrative takes no stance on the right or wrong answer, instead leaving it up to the interpretation of the reader.Issue #8 is another one-off story, this one delving into the relationship between Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson. It’s your typical “we can’t be together and you know why” comic book trash. I sort of give it a pass because it was written in 1999, but I’m pretty much over the desire of comic book writers to forcibly separate characters who are romantically linked to one another. It’s a tired old trope. Still, it was nice to see Barbara and Dick interacting on a personal level in an issue that was entirely character driven, with precisely zero in the way of superhero antics.Issues #9 through #11 are similar to the one-off issue #7, except in this case Canary ends up inadvertently releasing Joe Gardner, a half-alien clone of Guy Gardner. This appears to be set after Guy was killed, as Canary is really surprised to find Guy alive before finding out who he actually is. It’s an alright arc that builds toward something bigger happening beneath the surface, something that Canary and Oracle desperately need to be made aware of. It also has a really funny moment where Superman swoops in to save the day before immediately swanning off again (the sort of thing I keep wondering why never happens in these books).Overall a fun read. I can’t wait for Volume 3 to come out… in January of 2017. Dunno why DC decided to delay it out of September, but I’ll be there as soon as it lands.

This is a BEAUTIFUL book from cover-to-cover and BIRDS OF PREY is an absolute pleasure to turn each and every page! And I'm talking about authentic, smile-on-the-face pleasure at every turn of the page. Without revealing any spoilers, if you love to collect the books and art of your favorite character(s) (whether BLACK CANARY (mine!!), ORACLE, RAVEN, Dick Grayson, Guy Gardner, Superman) or favorite authors (Chuck DIXON) and artists (Greg LAND, Drew GERACI, and any other artist(s) who contributed to the Birds of Prey), and even if you already have the individual issues, BUY THIS BOOK!! The combo of DIXON-LAND-GERACI isn't going to disappoint! This volume is SPECTACULAR and reaffirms the reason I buy, read and collect comics -- the sheer quality of the storyline and the art!! But especially the art! (And in that regard, I really hope DC teams-up DIXON-LAND-GERACI on MANY other issues/chapters of the BIRDS OF PREY and/or ANY other DC characters of D-L-G's choice! But in the meantime, just celebrate that they produced these really fun issues, and enjoy the fact that you can add this compilation volume to your comic book collection for easy late-night reading and reference, and thus save your bagged/boarded individual issues for posterity!) : ) *Thank you, DC* for compiling the BIRDS OF PREY issues in volumes. And, parenthetically, I also can say from personal experience that this book makes a GREAT and much appreciated/valued gift -- so buy an extra one or two volumes and always keep them on hand for a perfect last-minute gift idea! You'll be an instant legend among your friends! Guaranteed!! : )

Still hunting down the sleaze of the world Black Canary (with Oracle at the assist) stumbles into a slave ring with a twist. These slaves are also kidnapped heiresses, business moguls and other member of the One Percent. The scheme is a good one (forced labor and ransom? Score!)Also included in this volume is a semi-romantic interlude with Nightwing, and the adventures of the female mercenary group, The Ravens, who cross paths with the Birds off and on. And sea monsters, for good measure.Dixon expands all of our troubled favorite ladies and challenges them in less than physical ways. Oracle dodges the military and Batman's babying. Black Canary tries to help people who really need it, sometimes even if they don't deserve it. It's nice to see them come together to a place where they're standing up for people because it's what's right, not because they're invincible or martial arts masters. Dixon also touches on the issues that super powered people would bring, like people suddenly becoming weapons in the nuclear arms race.This volume has its fun moments, but also has a more sober tone that the first book. Still, it's a fantastic read, very recommended for comic fans, and public libraries wanting to build a collection.

This is the best book I have ever read about what really goes on at a service academy, particularly Kings Point. Mr. Jockers not only describes his personal experiences while at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, but also weaves into his compelling story a description of world events at the time and what it was like going to a military academy in the late '60's, early '70's.Anyone (prospective students, parents, family and friends) interested in considering attending a service academy will benefit greatly from reading this book. It is written so as to describe, through personal experiences, the evolution of a Midshipman from being a Plebe candidate in the freshman year, to fully taking advantage of the Sea Year experience sailing on commercial ships to growing as a leader in Third and Second Class years (sophomore and junior years) to the ultimate leadership experience as a First Classman (senior year).I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the service academy life experience and for those of us who have lived it, and want to reminisce about the "good old days."

Excellent book and brings back vivid memories some of which I had forgotten. Easy read and well written. By page 30 I was laughing and crying at the same time. Having gone though the Academy with Gus, but in a different section, I'm glad to see my classmates all suffered the same plebe year. The story of O'leary's Ark will forever be tattooed in my brain and the night it blew down, and we are talking about a 300' replica of a ship, was a night we shall never forget. While today's academy may not be as tough hazing wise but the rigorous academics are even more than we had. Tough life but worth every second. Gus forgot to add our classmates are brothers for life. Thanks Gus for undertaking this venture.

Great read. Brought back many memories, some pleasant and some not so pleasant. I was in Section 328 with Gus, visited his family on weekends. Great bunch of guys made up our Section. Highly recommend this to all our KP classmates and anyone who wants an inside glimpse of life in a military academy.Rudy Orona

This is a very accurate account of what it was like to attend the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point) in the late 60's and early 70's. I am a class of 73 graduate of Kings point myself and although I don't remember ever meeting Mr. Jockers, his description of the Academy is right on. Although life at the Academy has changed since Mr. Jockers and I attended, I would recommend this book for anyone that is thinking of attending or has family or relatives that are thinking of attending. It will certainly give the reader some insights about Academy life. Good job Mr. Jockers.

Certainly a great read and would recommend it to all my fellow classmates. I was flooded with so many wonderful memories. Also a great read for future candidates considering USMMA. Mauritz Erhard '58E

My husband was a 1970 graduate of Kings Point. He had told me several things that had earned him demerits. I enjoyed reading this first hand account, laughing at several parts that were like my husband's experiences. A good read!

These "Real Justice " books are amongst a small set of books that are short , written for YA kids ,so they are quick reads .This one is the second one I've read . I think they all concentrate on cases in which someone is wrongly convicted .This one is about a famous Black boxer named Rubin Hurricane Carter ,who was from a bad neighborhood ,and in and out of trouble for most of his young life . He was no angel , but he was also not a killer . In 1966 , he and a friend just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time . 2 Black guys in a white car had just come into a local "whites only " bar, and blasted all 4 people inside . He and his friend were falsely accused and convicted. This tells his story and how he got released from jail for a crime he didn't commit.

Professional boxer Rubin Carter was jailed for a triple murder. Despite the evidence proving his innocence, he spent nearly twenty years in jail fighting for his freedom. This is a quick read, designed to be a teaching tool for young adults. I have mixed feelings about the effectiveness of the book for a diverse audience.
