Most of the wagons included in this book are drawings from The Hub, a coachbuilders' magazine from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s.As a scale HD vehicle modeler, I would highly recommend this book as a reference source. It does have a few engineering drawings that could be used to build from (a nice set of plans for the Hansom Cab are included); most prints give the diameter of the wheels, which can then be used to scale the drawings. There are quite a few pictures as well of very interesting commercial and trade vehicles. Since these drawings came from The Hub, the designers recommendations for painting and trimming the vehicle is listed with almost all the wagons.Very interesting from a historical perspective as well.

A real eye opener into the past. Fully illustrated with large black and white photos and line drawings with plenty of information on each wagon. You will really understand the importance of "horse power" in the old days.. Buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

Great book with lots of wonderful illustrations of horse-drawn vehicles. A must have for any history lover of that era. It is very educational.

We all know that until cars became inexpensive and popular--and roads improved to the point where every drive wasn't a spine-jostler--America moved literally by horsepower. This book, clearly illustrated with large engravings, photographs, and drafters' plans, portrays the broad assortment of (mostly) non-private vehicles that were used during the 19th and early 20th centuries, which might be called the heyday of the type. Beginning with an assortment of two-wheeled carts, it goes on to show bandwagons, freight wagons, "trucks" (a term used for the largest kind of four-wheelers), specialized store and delivery wagons (many whimsically shaped or decorated), hearses, ambulances, sheepherders' wagons, gypsy wagons, peddlers' wagons, food wagons, farm wagons, chuck wagons, log wagons, coal and ice wagons, windlass trucks, drays, express wagons, stagecoaches, city omnibuses, horsecars, cabs, fire engines, street sprinklers, mail wagons, moving vans, even a tree-transplanting wagon that could carry as much as 14 tons! Over 240 vehicles are shown, each with a description, and there's also a section at the back showing the kinds of harness used with them. Anyone interested in this subject must add this title to his collection without delay.

Most fascinating for those interested in history or in Horse drawn Transport.Some of these little carriages, such as the double decker omnibus and the tree transport, blow the mind in regards to the genius of our forbears in how they applied the technology they had. Then there are the dump wagons.A must for any library of anyone interested in pre-motor technology.

George Lakoff is the country’s leading expert on the framing of political discourse and one of the world’s most renowned linguists and cognitive scientists. He is the author of numerous books on politics–including Don’t Think of an Elephant!, The Political Mind, Moral Politics, Thinking Points, The Little Blue Book (with Elisabeth Wehling), and Whose Freedom?–as well as numerous books on language and the mind.  Lakoff has consulted with the leaders of hundreds of advocacy groups on framing issues, lectured to large audiences across the country, run dozens of workshops for activists, spoken regularly on radio talk shows and TV shows, addressed the policy retreats and the caucuses for both the Senate and the House Democrats, consulted with progressive pollsters and advertising agencies, and been interviewed at length in the public media, and he continues to do extensive research on the framing of public discourse. This is a good book that could have been great. It features a strong opening section in which Lakoff explicates on his basic concept of frames and how they relate to the brain's structure and functioning. Keeping a laser focus on that concept would have yielded a shorter book but one that's better than this one. Unfortunately, after a terrific start, Lakoff spends the final third of the book mostly riffing about policy issues themselves, rather than about how to frame them effectively. At this point, the book reads like an audition for gig as a pundit at the Washington Post instead of a primer on communicating effectively. And there's an awful lot of filler. (You can tell an author's padding when he unnecessarily resorts to lists. Lakoff has lots and lots of them, none helpful.)If you're interested in the field of political communication, this book is a must-read in spite of its shortcomings. But for me it was difficult to not think of the book that it shoulda, coulda, woulda been with much more focus and a few more real world examples.

About half way through reading, but this is a keeper. We have constant discussions about "why can't the other side see the truth" and "why don't they hear facts and believe them". This book explains it all. I'm hoping that the end will give examples of how to respond to specific questions/topics. This topic is one no one knows or talks about but it is present in everyday political and religious conversations.If someone asked for one reason why they should read, I guess my reply would be that you need to understand that your brain cannot understand a topic unless it has been previously introduced - we do this with 'frames' and this book will explain why people of different political beliefs differ so much

I like Lakoff’s cognitive approach and book-ending answers to conversing with slogan-laden so-called conservatives who beat up progressive and longtime tried and true American values with government by corporate power$. Many on both sides share these values, but that is obscured by past 3 years of jingoistic jousting.HavingRead the book, The Family, as I did: it traces how today’s government fulfills plans set in motion early in 20th century, Lakoff’s is a modern updated book with tips for undoing the work of all those decades-secret agendas for a different America, never envisioned in our important documents. Read, as I did, hundreds of original documents. Textbooks are published to sell, and wow! They are now simply deleting historical facts to sell to the audience which wants our nation’s past revamped.

Mr. Lakoff's book is a primer on talking to people on the right in a way that will more likely create understanding.Mr. Lakoff makes a cogent case that the primary issue is the way in which an issue is "framed." When we start to argue our point using the terminology of our opponent. it's giving your opponent the home field advantage. Not only have we assured we will lose the argument, we also practically assure that we will never find a meeting of the minds. We need to begin from a standpoint of shared values.The current antagonism between progressives and the right has a life of its own, and can poison any discussion from its beginning. This book offers positive ways to approach that problem.The final and most useful section is "How to respond to Conservatives." It offers many good guidelines. There are so many suggestions, I read that section several times to take it all in.Even though I avoid debates because of the anger they inevitably create, after reading the last chapter, I almost felt like seeking out a conservative to try to have a positive dialogue, and now I feel far more ready whenever that kind of conversation comes up.

I read the original and am enjoying the updated version. However, I made the mistake of ordering the audio version too. The person who reads it sounds like he doesn't understand what he is reading. It is very annoying and you can't get your money back.

This book is a must read for anyone who wonders why Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, etc. keep losing elections in spite of being the majority of the voters. Lackoff is masterful in explaining how our subconscious brains work and take the "frames" of the right wing and incorporate them into our own thinking. He expertly explains the difference in the Conservative Strong Father model and the Liberal Two Parent Egalitarian model. The strong father model is reinforced in families that practice most religions and it is reinforced in military service. Liberals have very little reinforcement of their two parent egalitarian model other than in liberal universities. I have a much clearer understanding of my culture now and I also learned a lot about how to frame my own values, rather than repeating the Fox News frames that are heard by most people, most often."

I am a communications graduate and I love the field, especially within communication theories, rhetoric, and connecting it to society. My professor has mentioned George Lakoff throughout my study and when I graduated my bachelors and went into my masters, I wanted to know more. The first book I bought was this one. This book made me realize so many things about American society and how we can overcome difficult times by using communications. It was fascinating to read plans that Democrats, or Republicans, can take to mold this place differently. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and even if you disagree with his views, you can still take away the ideas.

Everyone who is interested in the astrology of India is going to want this gorgeously illustrated two-volume set by James Kelleher. It's a gold mine of information, much of which is completely new to most Western students. Like other introductions to Vedic astrology, Path of Light explains the signs, houses, and aspects that Hindu practitioners use. What makes these volumes different, however, is the exciting additional material they contain, such as an invaluable section on the nakshatras (Hindu lunar mansions), which relates the ancient myths associated with these important stars. I was also thrilled to find detailed information about the 36 drekkanas, some of the important subdivisions of the Hindu horoscope, which are too often neglected in Vedic readings in the West. Beautiful illustrations of the nakshatras and drekkanas - many in full color - accompany the text. The artwork is enormously helpful for readers who want to memorize these stellar divisions and the stories associated with them. But once you have the basics down, how do you put together an insightful reading that will actually help your clients? Kelleher addresses the major issues clients ask about (health, career, relationships, children, etc.) and shows you where to look for practical answers in the Vedic horoscope and its subdivisions. About the Author

Author of the recently published two-volume book, Path of light, James Kelleher is a co-founder of the American Council of Vedic Astrology. He received his initial training in India and worked for five years in London as the personal assistant to the world-renowned Jyotishi, M. K. Ghandhi. He then returned to the United States where he has been consulting, lecturing, and teaching Vedic Astrology since 1984. He is one of the primary founders of the American Council of Vedic Astrology and the American College of Vedic Astrology. He is an adjunct professor of Jyotish at Hindu University of America. After the most expensive astrology book I ever ordered, I was expecting something enlightening.Throughout the entire book there were no example horoscopes.Of the 417 pages, 196 pages (almost half), was a cook book tour of mixtures between planets in houses. Rather dull, especially since there were no sample horoscopes.The last section on Nakshatras was 88 pages (plus color plates). The color pictures were excellent. But he omitted much informational facts such as rulerships and other background data.As an introductory text, look somewhere else.

I own an extensive library of Vedic astrology books including Path of Light Vol 1 and Vol II. Without any doubt, James Kelleher's volumes have been my ultimate "go-to" references for about a decade . They are well written, authoritative and filled with extensive examples. They are suitable for beginners as well as advanced jyotish students. James understanding of jyotish goes well beyond the cook-book style of chart reading. He skillfully integrates higher lessons of consciousness within each section of the books. I can't say enough positives about this work.

Good book and excellent quality publishing. You can buy for $38 from the authors website. I bought at an astrology conference where James lectured. I agree with a previous comment that the book is not as good as you expect. Vol II I believe is more useful and unique. This volume, while satisfactory, is missing detail on the signs, house, and planets. He does have a nice section on Nakshatras with a good interpretation. However, there are other books with more complete fundamentals (e.g., Light on Life by DeFouw and Svaboda). But the books looks so good on the shelf and the quality is amazing. If you can only afford one, get Vol II. I attached photos so you can see the quality.

James Kelleher's "Path of Light" volumes are a worthy and important contribution to Vedic Astrology by a man who has devoted over thirty years of his life to its study and practice. Beginning with the end, his Bibliography is an impressive list of the well and not-so-well known classics of Vedic Astrology that James sources, alongside an equally impressive list of modern authors and their works. To reach for the stars, you have to stand on the shoulders of giants, and James has clearly done his homework and paid his dues. And while there is plenty to love about this book, I will list briefly what makes it one of a kind, and a must-have for beginning, intermediate, and even advanced students of Jyotisha. Some books have some of these features, but none that I know have all of them:1. Compelling list of Drekkanas and some of their practical applications, based on research and years of trial & error.2. A guided tour through the subcharts that comprehends classic as well as modern techniques (from Parashara to Iyer, and everyone in between)3. A practical depiction of the Nakshatras and their uses, including techniques by Satyacharya and others.4. Detailed lists of Planet & House combinations. Unlike other "cookbooks" that disempower you by listing such combos, James has a knack for making his delineations insightful and instructive, so that you actually learn from reading them. My guess is this is because he is not parroting what other authors have written, but injecting his own experience from real-life charts.5. James opens up his teachings in audio/visual presentations at jameskelleher.com which serve to bolster the information in his books.6. Discussion of topics not normally found in other "serious" Jyotisha books, such as what kind of pets, vehicles, and residences a chart indicates7. Finally, my favorite part... the "Author's Journal"... biographical sketches between chapters that give us a window, an insight into James' life & experiences in India, as a student and practitioner, as a spiritual seeker and just an everyday guy traipsing across continents in the service of his art. In an era when so many Vedic Astrologers are closed and guarded, their methods restricted to an 'elite' few, their reputations at stake, James puts it all on the line and shares his insights with candor and humility. Many of us, students and teachers, would do well to follow his example.These are but a few of the treasures contained in "Path of Light" Volumes 1&2. Highly recommended reading... even advanced Jyotishis will learn much, if their minds are open.

If you want a theoritical book that is academeic, look elsewhere. If you want a book written by an excellent vedic astrologer who generously shares his more than 20 years of experience, buy this and Vol 2. Vol 1 puts down an excellent foundation. The sections on Nakshatras is especially revealing. Vol 2 goes in to Varga analysis which is simply Superb. Vol 2 is simply the best book I have read in Vedic Astrology on Varga analysis. The spiritual stories interspersed is icing on the cake. In my opinion these two books are a MUST for any serious student of Jyotish. The techniques are powerful enough for you to try on your sample charts and come away astonished. In Vol 1 I was especially impressed with the balanced approach to the dushthana houses (they are not all gloomy). Relationship analysis using Venus/Mars placements is also superb. Buy these books, you will NOT regret it.
